Africa’s Path To Universal Health Coverage
Universal Health Coverage (UHC) ensures that every individual has equitable access to a comprehensive spectrum of high-quality health services, spanning from health promotion and disease prevention to treatment, rehabilitation, and palliative care, all delivered at the time and place of need.
Importantly, UHC safeguards individuals from financial distress, enabling them to receive necessary care without enduring economic hardship.
It encompasses the entire continuum of essential healthcare services across all stages of life. [1]
From Commitments to Care
Achieving UHC is one of the targets the nations of the world set when they adopted the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015. [1]
In addition to embracing the SDGs, African nations made a significant commitment in 2001 through the Abuja Declaration, pledging to allocate at least 15% of their annual budgets to bolster sustainable health sector financing.
In 2019, African leaders gathered once again at the African Leadership Meeting, issuing the Addis Ababa Call to Action on UHC, further solidifying their commitment by signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the WHO to advance these goals. [2]
With 93% of African countries either having a health sector UHC policy or having included UHC as a goal in their health sector policies and strategies, it is evident that progress is being made on the continent [2].
However, it should be noted that despite the advances, 615 million people in Africa still do not receive the healthcare services they require. [3]

2wWhile Chandaria's article sheds light on well-known challenges, its analysis lacks depth in addressing the root causes of Africa's healthcare struggles. Achieving UHC demands more than acknowledging hurdles; it requires dismantling the political, economic, and structural barriers that sustain them. Without this perspective, the discourse on UHC in Africa risks remaining stagnant.
