After hiatus, negotiations resume on intellectual property and traditional knowledge

WIPO’s Intergovernmental Committee on Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge and Folklore (IGC) recently concluded a week-long session after extensive discussions on many of the core issues identified in the current IGC mandate, namely objectives, beneficiaries, subject matter, scope of protection and the meaning of “misappropriation”.

This was the first time that the IGC has directly addressed traditional knowledge since April 2014.

Negotiators developed a new version of the draft text and transmitted it to the next session of the IGC in late November.

An “Indicative List of Outstanding/Pending Issues to be Tackled/Solved at the Next Session” was also transmitted to that session.

A full summary of the session, with links to all the documents, is available, as is a short video recap.

The next session of the IGC, the 32nd session, will take place from November 28 to December 2. It will also address traditional knowledge.

It will be preceded by a Seminar on Intellectual Property and Traditional Knowledge, the draft program for which is now available.
