The Age of Empathetic Innovators: How AI Will Spark a Surge of Human Creativity ( A Hero’s Journey)
The following is my vision of the future based on my own experience, history itself, and an understanding of the resiliency and creative drive of human beings. It is in no way definitive or dogmatic. It’s just one possibility that I find probable. I hope it sparks curiosity, and I encourage your comments, thoughts, agreements, and disagreements.
The narrative of our future, where human and soft skills are essential to complement AI and computer technology, can be likened to the Hero's Journey, a classic story structure that involves a hero who goes on an adventure, faces and overcomes a crisis, and then returns home transformed. In this context, the "hero" is the modern worker navigating the evolving landscape of work, and the "journey" is the process of adapting and thriving in a world increasingly influenced by AI.
The Call to Adventure: The Emergence of AI
The journey begins with the emergence of AI, a powerful force that is reshaping the way we work and live. AI technologies are enhancing critical thinking processes
The Trials: Navigating the AI Landscape
In the trials stage of the journey, our hero must navigate the challenges and opportunities presented by AI. One of the key trials is learning to use AI as a tool while honing critical thinking skills[10]. AI can be used to automate and standardize the learning process, but there are concerns that it could have a negative impact on creativity and critical thinking[14]. However, AI also has the potential to enhance creativity and critical thinking, providing new opportunities for students to develop essential skills[6]. It provides the potential to enhance these skills by providing tools for students to explore new ideas, generate insights, and apply their knowledge in real-world contexts.
Another trial is the fear that AI will replace human creativity. While AI has made significant progress in creating realistic art, music, and even poetry, human creativity is a unique ability that cannot be replicated by AI[5]. AI and human creativity are both important forces that will shape the future of many industries, and there is a great deal of potential for collaboration and synergy between the two[5].
It also threatens job roles and fears of obsolescence abound. This is the call to adventure, the moment that propels our hero into a new, uncertain world. It can be scary and the temptation is to become cynical and to fight the new ‘enemy’.
The Transformation: Becoming Empathetic Innovators and Creative Critical Thinkers
The transformation stage of the journey involves our hero evolving into an Empathetic Innovator and Creative Critical Thinker. Our Hero begins to see that the technology, rather than an enemy, is an extension of their humanity and faculties. They begin to see human feelings, emotions and self-awareness as tools to integrate with the new way of being. Empathy is crucial to a human-centered design process
Creative Critical Thinkers are able to question, evaluate, and reflect on previously held beliefs. They recognize ambiguity and make informed judgments and decisions[2]. They are also able to think outside the box and generate ideas based on intuition, which can result in innovation and progress[5].
The Return: Becoming Renaissance Workers
The final stage of the journey is the return, where our hero comes back transformed, ready to apply their newfound skills and insights. In this context, the return involves becoming Renaissance Workers, individuals who are able to successfully perform any intellectual task that a human can do[3]. Renaissance Workers understand that AI is not a replacement for human capabilities but a tool for augmentation[15]. They are able to leverage AI to redefine the meaning of work, moving away from mundane tasks and towards what truly inspires and engages them[15].
I personally believe we will see an explosion of creativity, art, and innovation that will be a second, much larger renaissance period.
Sharpening Your Creative Critical Edge
To sharpen your Creative Critical Edge and push toward becoming an Empathetic Innovator, it's important to emphasize interdisciplinary learning
To navigate this changing landscape and your own ‘Hero’s Journey’, individuals should consider the following steps:
The journey towards becoming Empathetic Innovators, Creative Critical Thinkers, and Renaissance Workers in the age of AI is a challenging but rewarding one. By embracing the opportunities presented by AI and honing our human and soft skills, we can navigate this new landscape and emerge as "Human-Centric Catalysts" ready to shape the future.
This is my vision of one possible, and I believe probable future.
Keep creating and keep dreaming.
