The Agency Advisory
Quite the week it's been. My last as a 50 something. Next week brings a 6 to start the age. Eek. That's quite a change and is perhaps why my round-up of posts this week looks at ways to become more productive via Steve Parks ; at how to get the best for your agency valuation via Jonathan Smith and Gareth Healey ; and finally a detailed look at how to ensure your project scopes work for you via Jane Snowden . There's some good snippets in the Shorts section including perhaps evidence of light at the end of this economic malaise we've all been grappling with via Ben Smith and Alex Price .
Enjoy these highlights and thank you again to the smart people who share their thoughts, insights and experience so freely on LinkedIn.
As always, if you'd like to chat through any of the topics highlighted, do get in touch in all the normal ways.
Weighted Valuation Model Anyone?
Exiting seems to be a topic on the lips at the moment and so I was drawn to this post by Jonathan Smith who kindly shared a weighed valuation model 👉 https://lnkd.in/dzYzzaSb. he makes the point that the 5x EBITDA model of valuation is simplistic in the extreme and that valuing an agency is an art. His guidance seems wise. If you have a 'me too' agency, expect a lower valuation. If you have something that stands out from the crowd, expect a higher return. Now what was I saying about profitability and propositions.....
Productivity Apps to Check Out
Having lost more than a day of work due to a highly temperamental MacBook (don't ask), I was drawn to Steve Parks post on productivity tools. Here's a bloke who knows a thing or two about successful agencies so when he says these tools are more than simple alternatives to established apps, I take notice. He cites Shortwave 's email client; Sunsama 's day planner; and Text 's App messaging platform. I for one will be looking into these. Anything to help me regain the work time lost due to the bloody MacBook!
What's Your True Profitability?
This is a question I've asked many times when diving into management accounts. And Gareth Healey has posted on the topic stating the importance of 'normalising' the net profit figure. His post makes an important point. "It's not just about the numbers, it's about clarity." And I could not agree more. Having a skewed view of profit can lead to poor decision making. Accurate numbers ensure informed decisions.
Measuring Project Profitability
There's a definite theme to this week's newsletter. Jane Snowden 's headline caught my eye as she makes the case for ensuring agencies price projects to ensure profitability. Her post and link to a detailed blog, clearly explain the myriad of factors that agencies should take into account when deciding on, and pricing for, projects. It's wise advice.

Beware the Perils of Job Inflation
Wise words here from Claire Quansah who writes about the dangers of job title inflation (especially in small business). It's a short post but contains valuable advice identifying the downsides of offering up that big title too early.
Words of Optimism
Thank you Alex Price for your list of positive signs in the economy right now. We know things can change, but are we finally seeing green shoots of recovery? Check out Alex's post to see if you agree with him.
