AI and Strategy: From productivity to another winter?
There is a growing interest in the nexus of AI and strategy, especially after advancements in LLMs and ML algorithms. I have no doubt about the promises of this exciting machine-human connection for strategic management and organizations.
AI with supercomputers today can boost productivity and competitive advantage (e.g., using small language models) [MIT, 2023]. The world has been presented with many organizational application cases related to operational management, accountability, human resource management, engineering, marketing, finance, information systems, and most recently, ESG.
Nevertheless, we should not obscure the possibility that AI may reach another winter as soon as we move from technical organization issues such as algorithmic productivity and computational competitive advantage to complex organizational processes that entail consciousness, sensemaking, strategizing, and other perceptual and cognitive meta-activities much beyond digital and statistical AI capabilities.
With warm regards,
