ALTA’s Annual General Meeting: Celebrating Achievements and Fostering Connections
On October 26th, ALTA held its first in-person Annual General Meeting (AGM) since Covid. Before the meeting, tutors had a chance to see our students starring in the videos created for our student recruitment campaign.
The formal proceedings began with a warm welcome from ALTA’s founder and CEO, Paula Lucie-Smith, who expressed her gratitude for the dedication and hard work of all volunteers. These words were a reminder of the importance of ALTA’s mission to support adult literacy through a strong, collaborative network of tutors and learners.
Following this, the meeting moved to key reports, beginning with the Chairman’s Report, which provided an overview of ALTA’s achievements and strategic direction over the past year. This was followed by the Treasurer’s and Auditor’s Report, which highlighted continued financial stability that supports ALTA's ongoing initiatives. Both reports underscored the commitment to responsible stewardship and the growth of the organization in alignment with its mission.
A particularly heartwarming segment of the AGM was the presentation of certificates to tutors who had successfully completed their first year of teaching with ALTA. Mrs. Zalayhar Hassanali, ALTA Patron, graciously presented the certificates, acknowledging the hard work and dedication of these tutors who have contributed to the organization’s growth. This moment of recognition was not only a celebration of individual achievement but also a testament to the strength of ALTA’s community of educators.
Next was a dynamic and interactive segment: Tutor Networking and Feedback. Led by Programme Manager Joanne Phillip and Board Member Arlene Wallace-Romero, this session provided tutors with an opportunity to connect with their peers, share experiences, and discuss challenges and successes. Tutors from various regions and teaching different literacy levels exchanged insights, helping to foster collaboration and strengthen the ties between tutors from different venues. This session served as a powerful reminder of the importance of community and the shared commitment to improving literacy outcomes for adults.

As the meeting drew to a close, it was clear that ALTA’s impact continues to grow, both in terms of its educational offerings and its strong, engaged network of tutors and volunteers. The AGM was not just a chance to reflect on past achievements but also an opportunity to look ahead, as ALTA embarks on another year of serving the needs of adult learners.
