Bidding strategies on Amazon
It's been a while since we discussed the various Campaign bidding strategies Amazon has on offer so let's see how things have changed since last time around. Amazon Advertising offers several bidding strategies, each with its unique benefits, tailored to different goals and situations:
Fixed Bids
How it Works:
Your bid remains constant, unaffected by the likelihood of conversion. This is the most straightforward and uncomplicated bid strategy and gives you control over the exact amount you are willing to pay for a click.
Good to know:
Fixed bids offers simplicity and full control over your ad campaign budget, as you know exactly how much you're bidding. However, it might lead to you overpaying for clicks since the bid does not adjust to take into account conversion likelihood based on Amazon’s assessment. This is best for professionals changing their bids often based on recent data or when combined with tools that rely on their own bid algorithm and have enough data to chew on. It’s also useful when you are trying to maximize impression and steady ad spend like in the case of a single keyword campaign or in early ad efforts to rank your recently launched product.
Dynamic Bids - Down Only and Up and Down
These two come as a pair. Bids are adjusted in real-time when you select either of these two options. It's important to know that, historically, before Amazon gave us the option to change campaign bidding strategies, that Down Only was the default and only setting.
Down Only
How it works:
Amazon lowers your CPC bid if your ad is less likely to convert. This is based on their assessment of each situation, like if a search query is deemed as less relevant, a placement that doesn't perform well with that ASIN comes up or similar situations.
Good to Know:
Ideal for a profit-driven strategy, it conserves advertising spend in scenarios where conversions are unlikely. This option is especially suitable for new Amazon sellers or those on a tight budget. This is the best go-to strategy for bidding if you’re not sure what to choose.
Up and Down
How it works:
Amazon increases your bid by up to 100% for top-of-page placements (50% for other placements) if the likelihood of conversion is high and decreases it otherwise.

Good to Know:
Be careful with this one and make sure you completely understand what your costs could be before enabling it. This strategy can lead to more conversions, offering flexibility in variable bid markets. It's suitable for those campaigns that potentially spend more for a click, but finding more conversions overall is a desired outcome.
Rule-Based Bidding
How it works:
This strategy is available for campaigns that have run for at least 30 days with a minimum of 30 conversions and a $10 daily budget. It needs enough historical data to chew on in order to work. Amazon will adjust your base bids up and down to increase conversions while holding to your target. It allows setting specific return on advertising spend (RoAS) goals.
Good to Know:
Ideal for campaigns with specific RoAS goals. You can set your own RoAS target or follow Amazon’s recommendation. This strategy provides flexibility in adjusting your goals over time, though it requires regular monitoring to ensure effective spending.
Each of these strategies caters to different needs and levels of experience with Amazon Advertising, allowing advertisers to optimize their individual ad campaigns according to their specific objectives and budget constraints. That’s the best part, you can pick.
Next issue, we’ll cover the new Scheduled Rules section which is basically a form of “dayparting lite” from Amazon directly.

Amazon to Kick off Black Friday Shopping a Week Early
Amazon is kickstarting the holiday season early with its Black Friday sale beginning November 17th, a week before the traditional date. This will be followed by a Cyber Monday event from November 25-27. The platform promises frequent new deals, encouraging customers to regularly check amazon.com/blackfriday and amazon.com/cybermonday.
Sellers on Amazon, especially small businesses, stand to benefit significantly from this extended sales period. Amazon is promoting small businesses through special sections like amazon.com/smallbusinessdeals and a curated Small Business Gift Guide.
The probability of your brand being considered is high if it is registered in the Amazon Brand Registry or has participated in the Handmade program. These programs indicate a certain level of commitment and quality, and Amazon might prioritize these sellers for promotions during high-traffic events. Besides, sellers get heightened visibility, opportunities for increased sales, and a chance to attract new customers.
This is more than just a sale; it's a golden opportunity for Amazon sellers to shine. Boost your sales and visibility with this influx of eager shoppers. And if you're a small business, this is your moment to captivate a broader audience and grow your customer base.
Don't miss out on this chance to be part of the holiday rush. Check out the deals and strategies, and most importantly, get ready to elevate your sales game on Amazon's grand stage!
