Amazon wins battle with union... just

Welcome to the third Retail Week People & Leadership newsletter. This monthly update is your snapshot of the moves, news and trends defining what it means to work in retail today from the shop floor to the boardroom and everywhere in between.

The Big Story

A ballot by 3,000 Amazon workers for union recognition at its Coventry depot swung in the retailer’s favour by a hair’s breadth (50.5% to 49.5%), as the unrest brewing among workers at the ecommerce giant’s UK warehouses rumbles on.

As first reported by Retail Week, Amazon’s warehouse employees were “yearning for change”, according to a representative at the GMB union, and “there’s appetite to make changes at Amazon in every fulfilment centre across the country”. The union is now considering a legal challenge in the next stage of its fight.

Although Amazon very narrowly avoided the impact of the ballot this time, Retail Week executive editor George MacDonald points out that any inaction now would be Dickensian. He writes:

“The truth is that few, if any, employers will get away with treating workers poorly these days.

“Employment is still high and all retailers are competing with each other and other industries to attract and keep good staff.

“It’s not as if employees don’t have other options if they feel an employer is a thankless Gradgrind, as in Dickens’ Hard Times, who ‘with a rule and a pair of scales, and the multiplication table always in his pocket [is] ready to weigh and measure any parcel of human nature and tell you exactly what it comes to’.

“If that’s how Amazon comes across – and maybe the scales and tables do sound like its algorithm-ruled world – it can’t afford to sit on its laurels following the vote.”
