The Answer is Always Yes.
(This is a page from a book I'm about to finish. If you'd like a freebie copy, I'd love to get your thoughts. Let me know.)
Every day, if you’re perceptive enough, you get offered a new experience or something that could change your life. If you spend your life fearfully avoiding everything, you’ll miss it.
Nancy Reagan was wrong with her “Just say no,” bullshit.
The answer is always yes.
Be open to new things that make you uncomfortable. Fall on your face. Fail. When someone offers to take you to a concert, go. I had the opportunity to see Ella Fitzgerald at the Hollywood Bowl, and I didn’t go for some long-lost stupid reason, and I regret it to this day. I had the chance to do the foreign exchange student thing in Florence, Italy and I didn’t do it. Again, regret.
If you have a chance to go skydiving, go. If someone offers you a weird-smelling dish, try it.
Eat something terrible and get sick. Do something risky and get a scar or break something. If you think life is all about safety, you probably have a good reason. Maybe you’re carrying around some trauma from having terrible experiences, and that’s certainly understandable. But in the long run, you’ll have a more interesting life if you take those risks.
People who say no to everything are just a fucking bore.
Don’t be a fucking bore.
I shall reiterate this a third time.
The answer is always yes.
