Is anxiety on the rise or are we just more aware and do you think social media is the contributing factor?
I had the great opportunity to interview and film a dozen mental health experts recently in London and China at a conference hosted by Ipen. I asked each of them about social media’s impact on anxiety and whether they thought anxiety in general was on the rise?
They all agreed anxiety appears to be increasing especially in our youth, and social media plays a key role, but each had a different take on it. I was most surprised by the most learned and degreed experts such as Dr. Martin E.P. Seligman, the father of positive psychology. He pointed out that social media has existed in some form or medium throughout the existence of man. One comment repeated throughout all of my interviews was the desperate need to teach children how to use social media responsibly. Which raises the question, does it fall on the schools or the families; I think both. It was a great conversation and I found it all incredibly validating. Our project Angst, a documentary and VR experience is all about breaking the stigma around anxiety, angstmovie.com. It addresses prevention, self-care, wellness and positive conversation about mental health. We have a segment on social media but the topic is so big we’re in the process of shooting our next film “Like” a documentary on the role social media plays in our lives and the impact on the human condition. 7yI'm looking forward to this film. I've suffered from Chronic Anxiety Disorder and Panic attacks since I was 12. Thank you for bringing awareness to the public. Like so many other disorders, the general population it's quite uninformed which only perpetuates negative stigmas. Xxx
An artful actor whose muse is anxiety
7yIn USA and Canada, our society is based on the illusion of choice. I have never seen such fear in my 55 years. Big business thrives on fear. Since when do children need to be medicated? For me, we are a lost society, having been completely convinced that we cannot exist without our armies of doctors, mental health professionals, and insurance for literally everything. We have been manipulated into believing that nothing is our responsibility, and it is our God given right to sue somebody, anybody, if we stub our toe. Both parents work to service debt, and for the idea that someday they will be free and have a nice nest egg. Children are raised by nannies and the schools. Parents spend little time with their children. How can children not be anxious raised in that environment? Then, there is the added pressure of social media to get "likes" and acceptance. I have spent thirty years teaching adults and children, and what I have learned, from an anecdotal perspective, is that universally, we all want acceptance. When children are raised without being allowed to find that in themselves, it is very difficult to be centered.
