The Right To Disconnect: What it means for you

As of 26 August 2024, Fair Work implemented new legislation that gives most employees a ‘Right to Disconnect’ from work, but what is the Right to Disconnect?

This law allows employees to disconnect from work outside of their regular hours without the expectation of responding to emails, calls, or messages. Its purpose is to promote work-life balance and mental well-being, ensuring that time spent away from work is respected and valued.

What does this mean for you?

  • Clear Boundaries: You have the right to disengage from work communications after hours. This means that unless you’re on-call or have agreed otherwise, you’re not expected to respond to work-related messages outside of your scheduled hours. Consider turning off notifications so you can recharge.
  • Set Expectations: We encourage you to let people know when you will or won't be available.
  • Work-Life Balance: We hope this law empowers you to take full advantage of your personal time including your annual leave.

It’s important to note that this new workplace legislation does not apply to employees of small businesses, ie. those with fewer than 15 employees, until August 2025.
