ATLAS DENTAL STUDY - the European Dental Industry at your fingertip
The latest edition (March 2024) of the ATLAS DENTAL study is published - after the first release in 2019 it got a complete update in all aspects, and a significantly wider scope and extended coverage of trending topics. It is a comprehensive overview of the European Dental Market (and Industry).
250 pages (printed version) cover eleven countries in detail (Austria/ Belgium/ Czech Republic/ France/ Germany/ Italy/ Netherlands/ Sweden/ Switzerland/ Spain/ UK).
For each country you will find data like expenses for #dental treatment and dentists per capita, health insurance coverage, specialization of dental clinics/ dentists, dental lab overview plus much more like „how do I become a dentist in this country“.
Let´s have a quick glance at Italy: „Dental treatments are only 0,07% out of the total public health expenditures (EUR 127 Billion), which is due to the high out-of-pocket payments of the patients. 51.000 practicing #dentists (in 2021) are the second biggest number in Europe (beyond Germany, which has over 1/3 more inhabitants).
Dental graduates are only 1,89/ 1.000 persons (one of the lowest numbers in Europe). Italians are in average 48 years of age (highest average in Europe) with the highest segment of seniors (23,6%).
The dentists in Italy face competition by DSO´s (whereas only 5% of clinics are organized within a chain).
Laboratories (double the average of the eleven countries in this study) are stable in numbers and invest significantly into digital solutions.
The #dentalindustry is a cornerstone in Italys GDP and the total purchase volume of clinics and labs in Italy reached EUR 1,353 Billion in 2021 (1,1% less compared to 2020). There is a move towards internet purchase (and away from Deopts) whereas this is a comparably low 26%“.
Such data - plus much more information and analysis - will be found country by country plus on a cumulated basis on 18 pages.

4moInteresting information. Especially the DSO parts (both your post and comments). Over the past few years, China's dental industry has experienced substantial capital investment, with many efforts focused on integrating practices based on the DSO model, even aiming for public listings. However, with recent changes in the economic environment and regulatory policies, the industry is now reassessing the value of the DSO model. We are currently organizing a discussion on the trends of DSOs in China, and we are eager to explore more insights from European experiences. Thank you for sharing.
