Authorpreneurship : Strategies

An author is a very small business, but dealing in big ideas. As one person, it is hard to be business- like and entrepreneurial, but the author is actually a brand. Strategies may help save time and energy.

Recently the 2nd edition of 'Authorpreneurship' was launched by Amba Press at St. Kilda Readings book shop to a packed out audience.

We joked that the book cover, jacket, scarf and tiny book bling badge modelled on the cover

were colour co-ordinated.

And so were the book biscuits based on the cover. Fitted flat in a single box. Didn't create a mess in the bookshop. Plus bookmarks.

All colourful ideas by Amba Press publisher Alicia to link with my 'Golden Anniversary' as it's the 50th year since I was first published. A 'vintage' author is the new term. Not old! The first edition of 'Authorpreneurship' was commissioned by the Australian Society of Authors. And in today's post Covid, A.I. challenging times, the strategies are even more relevant for self employed creatives.

A satisfying book launch is always a collaboration : a sharing of skills. Venue. Publisher. Author. Readers. Marketing. Photos holding the book. News items later. Many of us have used rent-a-crowd family when desperate for numbers ( my worst signing early on in my career , in a country town, was the only woman who turned up and said ' Excuse me. Where are the toilets?' ) Experiences like that make you appreciate skilled help. I always appreciate my family but this time, they had to stand instead of spreading out to look like a crowd.

Anna Ciddor ,a fellow author ,wrote a short piece on the launch for the newsletter of the Society of Women Writers Victoria and it was a different kind of feedback from a highly experienced and well published writer. Much appreciated.

Authorpreneurship book launch by Anna Ciddor

It was a sunny afternoon in wintery Melbourne, and a large crowd were making their way into Readings bookstore in buzzing Acland Street, St Kilda … They had all come to hear Hazel Edwards (our Society of Women Writers Victoria patron) in discussion with Alicia Cohen, publisher from Amba Press. The date was 23 June and I was privileged to be a member of that audience – though I did end up in the standing-room-only overflow! Alicia was launching a new edition of Hazel’s edifying and entertaining book Authorpreneurship.

We were treated to a host of revealing thoughts, useful tips and humorous anecdotes as Hazel ranged over her decades of experience in the literary industry. One of the highlights for me was when Alicia asked Hazel what to do when an aspiring writer thrusts their precious manuscript at you and asks for advice! The answer was re-write, re-write and re-write. People mistakenly think writing picture books for kids is easy – but it isn’t!

Here are some of the other points I most enjoyed in Hazel’s talk:

1.     The dreaded bogey AI does have its uses for mundane tasks such as instruction manuals or even book blurbs. But Hazel queried how much soul AI could instil in a creative piece.

2.     Hazel discussed giving new life to old works. She pointed out that some stories can have long-lasting universal appeal and relevance, but warned that creating characters or plots that rely on specific technology (such as a Walkman) can date them and make them less attractive after a few years.

3.     Being a writer requires not just creativity, but skills in: understanding rights and contracts, branding, accounting, public speaking, photography, Zoom… In fact being a writer means running a small business!

4.     When Alicia asked how to deal with rejection, Hazel offered the advice to be versatile. Maybe there is a different way you could use the same material?

5.     Hazel touched on the controversial and popular trend of criticising writers who create characters from a different culture or background from their own. As Hazel pointed out, if we aren’t allowed to imagine living in another person’s skin, experiencing situations different from our own, then every author could only write one book – an autobiography!

But all this was just a tiny taste of what is available inside the cover of Authorpreneurship a cover that glows with a golden hue to celebrate Hazel’s fifty years since her first adult title and the later release of her best-selling picture book, There’s a Hippopotamus on our roof eating cake. Many of my affectionately self-named 'Hazelnuts' came to the launch. These are writers I've mentored and who have finished and published their book projects within the year. Some memoirs. Some fiction. Some family history. Also non-fiction. Each was interested in how they might conduct a launch for their own work. The venue benefit of a bookshop launch is that they handle the sales during a launch or signing and often request additional autographed copies for the counter sales. Also the title goes into their catalogue. Authors really appreciate independent books shops and like to support them. But occasionally a different kind of themed venue fits the subject of the book, as long as there's a map and parking and someone to look after the sales while the author signs with a signature NOT used for their credit card.

Later that month I was autographing books at The Darwin Bookshop and there was keen interest from aspiring writers and creatives in other fields in the Northern Territory for the Authorpreneurship book. Plus the temperature was 35 degrees, a little warmer than Melbourne. Another independent bookshop with a well read staff.

Titles matter. And A.I, keeps reformatting the spelling on 'Authorpreneurship' but ....

Sounds like I'll need a copy for recommended reading for students when we talk about an author and their brand. I always say authors are the CEO of their book!
