Avoiding The "O" Word When You're An Age 40+ Job Seeker

Avoiding The "O" Word When You're An Age 40+ Job Seeker

The dreaded "O" word ... overqualified.

It's the worst word that employers use to describe age 40+ job seekers. If you've ever had the "O" word directed at you, you know firsthand how demoralizing and frustrating it feels.

You end up thinking, if I was so qualified, why aren't you hiring me?

The answer probably isn't because you were overqualified.

But employers do use that word as a legally safer alternative to overpriced. It doesn't matter if your salary expectations are high or low, you can still be viewed as overpriced but described as overqualified.

The reason employers call you overqualified comes down to these 3 things:

  1. An employer has a perception of your compensation expectations, even if you haven't discussed them (What an employer perceives you Should want vs what you actually want in your individual situation).
  2. You haven't proven to the employer that you're worth that perceived compensation, even when you think you did.
  3. Instead of considering you, the employer is interested in other candidates who did prove they were worth it, or less expensive (and less experienced) candidates who present a lower risk.

The good news is that you can change this perception. You can change employer perceptions that you're overpriced and won't be worth it. You can stop being called overqualified, and instead be referred to as ... Hired.

And I can show you how, like I've helped thousands of age 40, 50, 60, and even 70 job seekers beat job search ageism.

I help people solve the most difficult job search problems, including job search acceleration, getting past ATSs, ageism, remote positions, product/job function/career/industry/ geographic change, unemployment, "bouncy" recent career path, job search turnaround, seeking raise/promotion, industry in decline/consolidation, long term gaps, family leave, or other of the most challenging job search issues.
