Being Humble is Outdated
How many times have you caught yourself refusing to accept a compliment?
When someone asks you what you do for a living, do you proudly tell them about your business? Or do you play down your achievements and the amount of work that it has taken you to get there in order to fit in?
Ever since we were young we have been conditioned to play down our success.
To remain small for the comfort of others.
And I find this is even more so true for the female business owners that I meet.
If you’re assertive you’re bossy.
If you’re taking charge of a situation you’re a b****.
And if you stand out, then you’re just a show off, or asking for the wrong attention.
I remember when I was young and growing up in rural England this was much the same for me.
I was told to only speak when spoken to, not tread on anyone's toes, and certainly not stray from the path.
All of that started to unravel as I learned through university that staying quiet got me nowhere.
No one noticed me, and I couldn’t excel at anything if people weren’t noticing what I was doing or the results I was achieving.
Once I entered the workforce I found myself falling into old habits of playing small… and I even fell prey to corporate bullying which was all an attempt to silence me further and dim my light.
And that was when I realised that being quiet for other people’s comfort doesn’t stop you from hurting other people’s feelings… it just makes it easier for people to push you down and silence you.
While being loud might ruffle some feathers, you gain one incredibly important thing… a voice.
A voice for you and for all that you stand for. For your community, your people, your family, your legacy.
So next time that someone compliments you I don’t want you to brush it off, I want you to say thank you.

The next time you achieve something in your business I want you to celebrate it.
The next time that someone asks you what you do I want you to talk about your business with confidence and pride.
Because you have achieved amazing things up until this point, and the only way you are going to achieve more is if people are aware of who you are, what you are doing, and can see that you are confident in what you do.
Being humble is outdated.
It’s time to embrace your brilliance.

2yThanks for the article Janine Garner. Recently, I have revisited what humility means to me by looking at Brené Brown's definition from "Atlas of the Heart" which is: "humility is openness to new learning combined with a balanced and accurate assessment of our contributions, including our strengths, imperfections, and opportunities for growth". That sounds right in line with sharing our accomplishments (strengths)!
