The best advice for an effective visual brand that attract the right clients
In this article, you will learn:
- What is Visual Brand Identity and how it can help your business.
- What is Visual Identity Design and why it is actually important.
- And three things that are crucial for an effective visual brand. That attract the right client.
Visual identity design includes designed visual elements (logos and other symbols, photographs, colors, patterns, fonts, illustrations, ...) and all the visible material with which the company regularly and consistently presents itself. This material usually includes business cards, brochures, books, web pages, t-shirts, external (walls, windows) and internal (walls, doors) signages, promotional gifts, etc.
When business model includes a customer as a co-creator of your brand, you will also come across the term Visual Brand Identity design.
Branding briefly means what your customers think about you, your company. There are two ways of branding. Intentional and unintentional. As far as your business is concerned, it is very useful for your business, if your branding is intentional, thus more strategic.
I'll explain why in a second, but firstly I explain the term branding, so the whole term visual brand will make more sense for you and how it can help your business.
The actual term "branding" originates from the United States. Different cattle breeders had all their calves in a common fence. These calves were branded and got their own stamp, a trademark of their livestock breeder. And when calves were offered to the potential buyers, buyers in all the confusion and similarity of the calves, thanks to the trademark, found out who their owner was and what kind of quality they could expect they will get. With the help of a trademark- which in the eyes of a buyer represented the level of reputation and trust towards livestock owner-breeder - they decided which calf they will eventually buy.
So, this is how we got the term branding. Anyway, do you remember the time of Industrial Revolution? Well, I don't, but I heard about it for the first time, I think, I was at school. At that time, the world was flooded by the power of a steam engine, which was one of the factors that greatly accelerated global economic growth. But in some geographical areas, like Balkan peninsula, wasn't really the steam engine that caused the industrial revolution, but rather printing and paper industry.
You are probably wondering, why I'm telling you all this? Why should you care? Somehow during this period, we got an example how visual identity first began to be used by printers, on a commercial level. Because of the rapid economic growth, the printers got a competition. A competition on a bigger scale. Because of better trading roots, faster communication enabled by industrial revolution the printing material became quantitatively and financially more accessible. And this meant that "everyone" could provide printing services. And of course, "everyone" offered their services at a much more favourable price. Can you imagine this situation? Most of the customers, of course, chose cheaper services. On top of that, these services were not always the highest quality, and the products were not what a customer expected to be. Printers, especially those who continued to maintain the quality and wanted to keep their customers at the same time, started to use their own trademarks. they looked more like coats of arms, today we could just call them logos. They wanted to tell their customers who they are and what customers can expect from them. Company's visual identity design has therefore developed, and still is developing, because of the competition.
Do you think you don't have any competition? Then you can take advantage of the visual image and use it as it was used by Roman emperors. For displaying power and authority over its thralls and over the areas they concurred. A joke on the side. Of course, you have a competition.
"Today's market is no longer responding to the type of advertising that has worked in the past. There are too many products, too many companies, too much marketing noise. "
And these are the words of Jack Trout and Al Riesa, the marketing pioneers. And 1972 was the year they made this claim.
Well, as you can see the problems remain the same throughout the centuries of commerce, but the ways and tools to deal with these problems are changing.
But there is always a prospect that likes to challenge me a little and likes to provoke: "Ok, so, how will you assure me that my visual brand will be effective? How will I know that I'll like it and that it will help me to attract the right clients? "
And I'm always so delighted to answer:
These three things are crucial for effective visual brand that attract the right clients:
- You need to understand yourself, your company and accept it as it really is. Almost everything you do in your business is cantered around your client. But here you have one of the rare opportunities where you can focus on your values. On your characteristics, ideas and beliefs that attract the right customers and help you that your client stays loyal to you. People identify themselves with the ideas, beliefs and values that you are radiating and because of that they are willing to pay more in comparison to cheaper services. And there are ways to transition that into visual image. And for that the next thing is that you need is to understand your clients.
- You need to understand your customers and accept them as they are. Do you ever ask your customers why they buy from you? Have you asked them what did they think how you could help them before they actually used your service or your product? Have you asked them why are they satisfied with your service or why they are not? Do you know their hopes, fears, desires, ambitions, opinions, beliefs, problems and pains? If you're asking your customer all these questions when she decides to leave you is usually already too late. They don't want to deal with you anymore and want to get away from you as soon as possible. Do you know what your customers know about you? When they heard about you a few times already, when they get to know you more, you become more important to them. And this is the time that the importance of the visual image of the company grows. You will probably be surprised, but it is confirmed also by the research that company's visual brand plays a much greater role at increasing customer loyalty and the loyalty of employees. And eventually helps a lot for your customers and employees to become your company ambassadors. Especially if they have the feeling that their opinion matters when creating a story of your company. They talk about you, share your posts on social networks and wear t-shirts with your visual image. Or they drink from your cup, without which they do not imagine their morning coffee. Many are already aware of the fact that it will help them to stand out from the flood of other service providers by seeking help from their own customers. They know you the most, are emotionally (positive or negative) most involved in your service and for this cause they bring you the money. Therefore, and after all, their opinion is the only one that counts.
- That is why the third step comes in handy here, which is you need to understand your competition. Do you know who your competitor is? If you sell running trainers, your competition is not necessarily a sports store that also sells running trainers. Your competition may be a sports coach who insists that you do not need to buy running trainers and to not trust the sellers. Because the problem is that you must properly learn how to run, and that nothing is wrong with your trainers. And even worse that you do not need running trainers or a sports coach, because someone will teach you how to meditate and you will feel like you have been natural born runners since birth. Of course, it would be great to have all three. And more so that competition will be ready to complement each other.
And what does all this have to do with the visual brand? It has to do a lot, because here is where you show your difference. All these three steps give you a valuable insight into your brand, not only from your point of view, but also from the view of your customers and your competition. These three steps, are showing you your main attributes and these attributes are those elements that are translated into a visual form that becomes a recognisable visual image, visual brand of your company.
Don't give me wrong, It's true!!! Visual branding is not a substitute for your excellent service or your products. It does not replace the fact that you have really great employees and that you take great care of your customers. It does not replace your professional marketing and the immensely well-established sales team. But a good visual identity will mean your customers all that.
