I can’t remember where I first heard this idea, I think it may have been on a podcast, but I remember how much it hit me hard when I thought about it.
So what are the 95-year-old Olympics? Essentially being able to function in life when you are 95. Get yourself dressed, carry stuff, move around, or maybe even still drive a car.
This is what ALL of our athletic and functional goals should be, being able to function at the end of our lives so we can ride off into the sunset on our terms.
We are all so guilty of doing a lot of destructive things to our bodies, without ever taking the time to think about our future body and how much it would suck to lose all our function and more drastically our dignity.
I did A LOT of really dumb shit in my teens and through my 20s, a lot of irreversible damage to my body. I guess I was just young and naive back then, thinking I was invincible. I could deadlift well over 700 pounds, bench, and squat a house and was an absolute wrecking ball on the football field.
I also ate like garbage, drank way too much, and partied my ass off. At the time I could care less about my future self, but I wish I had a time machine right now so I could go back and kick my 21-year-old self in the ass and show him how I am now.
I blew out my back, my neck and had more concussions than I can remember. I am making strides to try to regain my health back and has been a long road, with a new perspective taking over me.
I see people all the time in my clinic being horrible to their bodies, doing workouts they don’t need to do, and just flat out abusing their bodies, many of them younger than my age of 35. I also see the older version and it’s an absolute train wreck.
So the take-home here is pretty simple…. Don’t abuse your body, take care of it, then you can be the most kick-ass and awesome old person out there that doesn’t end up in a nursing home.
