BHM Special: An appreciation post for Nigerian-born professionals

BHM Special: An appreciation post for Nigerian-born professionals

London has a knack for attracting talent. In a city full of options, I recall feeling a sense of belonging within six months of moving to London to pursue a career. To be fair, I never really gave my birth place of Birmingham the opportunity to professionally woo me.

Not too long ago, one was a bit too quick to remind whomever asked that they were not born abroad but born in the UK. The word foreigner had not-so-subtle dehumanising undertones. Today, only a handful of my professional colleagues in London were also born here. I have had the pleasure to work with several foreign–born professionals currently based in London; French, Chinese, American, Togolese, Moroccan, Iranian and Kenyan to name but a few. Though the word ‘immigrant’ is bandied about politically, I believe it is much more inclusive and fair to refer to most of the aforementioned folks as expatriates or expats.

Last week’s 11 Billion USD ruling in the UK High Courts in favour of Nigeria might have restored some faith in governance however, the green passport is still not the easiest to carry. From music to food, fashion to entertainment, and lots more, Nigerian culture is certainly on the rise! Therefore, I would love to give flowers to some Nigerian expats I have had the distinct privilege to work with over the last few months. Their grit, tenacity, trailblazing vision, relentless passion, resourcefulness, respectfulness, and zest for life never ceases to amaze me. I continue to be inspired by and learn from these professionals, who feel more like brothers and sisters to me than clients / colleagues.

This is far from an exhaustive list of cultural ambassadors, however please join me to celebrate these living legends:

From the law to tech, academia to politics, activism to entertainment, this is an exceptional bunch of talented individuals that are building cultural bridges while operating at the highest levels within their respective professions, don’t you agree? I have not even talked about our bread-and-butter of tech innovators and capital allocators whom we appreciate the opportunity to serve.

In closing, I am curious to read about which expats inspire(d) you within your profession. Please give them your flowers in the comments below.

Nzube, the common denominator is that all these lights shine brighter with you in their lives. One has to give the flowers also, to where they are grown. We salute you and that’s for your work with all nationalities, not just us Naija Expats. 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾 Thanks for the mention. Keep shining your light.
