PSALM 73

The End of the Wicked Contrasted with That of the Righteous.

A Psalm of Asaph.

God certainly is a good to Israel,

To those who are b pure in heart!

But as for me, a my feet came close to stumbling,

My steps 1 had almost slipped.

For I was a envious of the 1 arrogant

As I saw the b prosperity of the wicked.

For there are no pains in their death,

And their belly is fat.

They are a not 1 in trouble like other people,

Nor are they b tormented together with the rest of mankind.

Therefore arrogance is a their necklace;

The b garment of violence covers them.

Their eye 1 bulges from a fatness;

The imaginations of their heart overflow.

They a mock and 1 wickedly speak of oppression;

They b speak from on high.

They have a set their mouth 1 against the heavens,

And their tongue 2 parades through the earth.

10 Therefore 1 his people return here,

And a abundant waters are drunk by them.

11 They say, “a How does God know?

And is there knowledge 1 with the Most High?”

12 Behold, a these are the wicked;

And always b at ease, they have increased in wealth.

13 Surely a in vain I have 1 kept my heart pure

And b washed my hands in innocence;

14 For I have been stricken a all day long,

And 1 b punished every morning.

15 If I had said, “I will speak this way,”

Behold, I would have betrayed the a generation of Your children.

16 When I a thought of understanding this,

It was 1 troublesome in my sight

17 Until I entered the 1 a sanctuary of God;

Then I perceived their b end.

18 You indeed put them on a slippery ground;

You dropped them into 1 b ruin.

19 How they are 1 a destroyed in a moment!

They are utterly swept away by b sudden terrors!

20 Like a a dream when one awakes,

Lord, when b stirred, You will c despise their image.

21 When my a heart was embittered

And I was b pierced 1 within,

22 Then I was a stupid and ignorant;

I was like an b animal 1 before You.

23 Nevertheless a I am continually with You;

You have taken hold of my right hand.

24 You will a guide me with Your plan,

And afterward b receive me 1 to glory.

25 a Whom do I have in heaven but You?

And with You, I desire nothing on earth.

26 My a flesh and my heart may fail,

But God is the 1 strength of my heart and my b portion forever.

27 For, behold, a those who are far from You will b perish;

You have destroyed all those who 1 c are unfaithful to You.

28 But as for me, a the nearness of God is good for me;

I have made the Lord 1 God my b refuge,

So that I may c tell of all Your works. 1

Bible Study Question

Have you forgotten why YHWH Disciplines You?

YHWH disciplines His Son and Daughters, Heb 12:4–11, Ro 8:1–17, to teach and mold them, Joh 3:36, Heb 12:5-8, Rev 2:11-17, Rev 3:19, that they receive salvation, John 3:09-18, John 3:36, Acts 16:31, Rom 10:9-10!!!!

  A Father’s Discipline

a You have not yet resisted 1 b to the point of shedding blood in your striving against sin; 5 and you have forgotten the exhortation which is addressed to you as sons,

“a My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord,

Nor b faint when you are punished by Him;

a For b whom the Lord loves He disciplines,

And He punishes every son whom He accepts.”

It is for discipline that you endure; a God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline? 8 But if you are without discipline, a of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. 9 Furthermore, we had 1 earthly fathers to discipline us, and we a respected them; shall we not much more be subject to b the Father of 2 spirits, and c live? 10 For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but He disciplines us for our good, a so that we may share His holiness. 11 a For the moment, all discipline seems not to be pleasant, but painful; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterward it yields the b peaceful fruit of righteousness. 1

New American Standard Bible (La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation, 2020), Heb 12:4–11.

  Deliverance from Bondage

Therefore there is now no a condemnation at all for those who are b in c Christ Jesus. 2 For a the law of the Spirit of life 1 in b Christ Jesus c has set you free from the law of sin and of death. 3 For a what the Law could not do, 1 b weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in c the likeness of 2 sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, 4 so that the a requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us who b do not walk 1 according to the flesh but 1 according to the Spirit. 5 For those who are in accord with the flesh set their minds on a the things of the flesh, but those who are in accord with the Spirit, b the things of the Spirit. 6 a For the mind 1 set on the flesh is b death, but the mind 1 set on the Spirit is life and peace, 7 because the mind 1 set on the flesh is a hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so, 8 and those who are a in the flesh cannot please God.

However, you are not a in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God b dwells in you. But c if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. 10 a If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is 1 alive because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of Him who a raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, b He who raised c Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies 1 through His Spirit who dwells in you.

12 So then, brothers and sisters, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh—13 for a if you are living in accord with the flesh, you are going to die; but if by the Spirit you are b putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For all who are a being led by the Spirit of God, these are b sons and daughters of God. 15 For you a have not received a spirit of slavery 1 leading to fear again, but you b have received 2 a spirit of adoption as sons and daughters by which we cry out, “c Abba! 3 Father!” 16 The Spirit Himself a testifies with our spirit that we are b children of God, 17 and if children, a heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, b if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him. 1
