The book "Brain Rules - 12 Principles for Surviving and Thriving by John Medina" - Book Summary

This is a more scientific book. People who are into science can be able to understand easily. I made some simplifications to understand by everyone. Before diving into the topic, it is better to know about the book author John Medina. John Medina is a developmental molecular biologist, research consultant and professor at the Department of Biological Engineering of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Washington.

Rule # 1: Exercise increases brainpower.

We all have worked out in the morning routine to start with a healthy lifestyle. Physical exercise is not only beneficial to your physical body but also beneficial to your brain. Regular physical activity improves your decision-making skills by boosting your brain.

Rule # 2: Our brain has evolved.

During the human evaluation, the human brain has evolved and learned a more important thing that cooperation leads to domination. Instead of becoming bigger, humans decided to evolve smarter. Our brains are prone to make more relationships because these relationships help achieve more.

Rule # 3: Every brain is wired differently.

We wrongly assume everyone’s brains are the same but two people don’t have the same brain, not even twin brothers or sisters. The current school system ignores it by having a grading system based on age.

Rule # 4: We don’t pay attention to boring things.

You may experience while you are reading anything boring or anything not understands, you may feel sleepy whereas when you are going interesting things, you may forget the sleep. This is simply because of Brain functions.

Rule # 5: Repeat to remember.

The human brain can be able to hold about seven pieces of information (for example a 7-digit of a phone number) for less than 30 seconds. To extend that 30 seconds to few hours, we have to repeat to remember.

Rule # 6: Music can make our brain smarter.

Listening to music and composing music makes your brain smarter, as well as Music listening to music, will increase your memory power, reading skills and emotional intelligence. You may find this in musician, perhaps explanatory.

Rule # 7: Sleep well think well.

During eight hours of quality sleep, the brain is not resting which is almost active to store the information we received throughout the day, to permanent memory. That is why we are advised to sleep well before the exam.

Rule # 8: Stressed brain doesn’t learn in the same way.

Our brain is designed to handle stress in less than 30 seconds. The brain is not build to handle more than 30 seconds. Stress will damage the memory and executive function of the brain.

Rule # 9: Stimulate more of your senses.

We have sight, sound, taste, smell, touch, energetic senses which work together so it is important to stimulate them. The brain is responsible for stimulating our senses.

Rule # 10: Vision trumps all the senses.

We will remember 10 % of hearing pieces of information whereas we will remember 65% of seeing pieces of information. Our brain is good at remembering pictures. Our brain sees the text as lots of tiny pictures to identify certain features in the text to read them.

Rule # 11: Male and female brains are different.

Men and women handle acute stress differently. Women are more likely to get depressed than men. Males exhibit more antisocial behaviour whereas females have more anxiety.

Rule # 12: We are powerful natural explorers.

All babies are examples of how we gather information. Babies are observing and experimenting with objects to learn things. For example, see the babies what are doing to realize how we are powerful natural explorers.
