Scottish refugees began arriving in North America after the Jacobite Rising of 1745. The English victors dismantled the clans, imprisoned many surviving participants of “The Rising” and drove others from their farms and homes. These Scots were drawn to the English colonies that offered economic opportunities for the tenacious, not just the titled. They were survivors, people who better understood life as a game of chance mixed with creativity, skill, and timing. The newly arrived Scottish refugees, immigrants, and the James family of this story were people whose character was forged on the anvil of adversity. This diverse group of Scots enriched the culture and helped make America a beacon of freedom.

In 1929, a group of politicians gathered in Mexico City for the purpose of putting an end to the divisive and lethal power struggles by fusing their new political party, the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), with the Mexican nation-state. The PRI ruled Mexico for over 80 years. During its time in power, the PRI became a symbol of corruption, repression, fiscal mismanagement, and electoral fraud. The party’s kleptocratic successes were based on the tactics used by the infamous King Herod of Judea. The methods used to accomplish the PRI’s political rise became known as Herod’s Law: Do unto others before they do it to you.
