Belmond Cadogan
Open since February, the brand-new Belmond Cadogan is the second UK hotel from the group behind Raymond Blanc’s luxury hotel-restaurant Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons. Setting up home in the very building where Lillie Langtry courted the Prince of Wales and Oscar Wilde once resided (it was also the location of the playwright’s infamous arrest), the new hotel is equidistant from Chelsea and Knightsbridge, placing guests in one of London’s most upmarket and fashionable districts. The 54 rooms and suites pay tribute to the building’s colourful past while still offering every modern indulgence and the in-house restaurant is overseen by celebrated chef Adam Handling. Guests also have access to the tranquil Cadogan Place Gardens, usually reserved for locals only.
Hard Rock Hotel London
Opening its doors in the same year that London gets a new flagship Hard Rock Cafe in Piccadilly Circus, the brand-new Hard Rock Hotel London welcomed its first guests just last month. Located a twenty-minute walk from the original Hard Rock Cafe, which opened on Park Lane back in 1971, the behemoth 900-room hotel sits on the corner of Oxford Street and Park Lane, placing it near Marble Arch and Hyde Park. A large lobby lounge has been designed with both cocktails and live music in mind while carefully curated memorabilia reference the site’s musical past – Jimi Hendrix, Nina Simone and Bob Dylan are all former residents. There is, of course, a Hard Rock Cafe on site along with a Rock Shop, a restaurant and a speakeasy bar. Rooms come equipped with the signature Sound of Your Stay and Rock Om experiences while the Rock Royalty suites include a personal concierge and access to a private lounge.
White City House
Finding its home in the former BBC Television Centre, the new White City House opened its doors last year and forms part of a £1.5 billion residential and retail makeover that aims to draw creatives to west London. A new addition to the rapidly expanding Soho House group, the property has 45 bedrooms, several bars and restaurants, an Electric Cinema, a huge gym complete with hammam and sauna, two floors reserved for members and hotel guests, and the obligatory Soho House rooftop swimming pool. As is typical of all Soho House properties, the aesthetic is retro yet contemporary with vintage furnishings, dark wood accents, eclectic patterns and honeycomb tiling.
Kimpton Fitzroy London
Housed in a Grade II listed building formerly occupied by the Charles Fitzroy Doll-designed Hotel Russell, Kimpton Fitzroy London is one of London’s best new hotels. The magnificent property makes a bold first impression thanks to its soaring terracotta facade – one of the most spectacular hotel exteriors in the capital – and opulent lobby featuring multi-coloured marble, mosaic floors and glistening chandeliers. A grand staircase leads to marble-lined corridors and 334 Tara Bernerd-designed rooms featuring crushed velvet, neutral tones and plush bathrooms while the decadent Fitz’s Bar, on-trend Neptune restaurant and beautiful Palm Court are destinations the Bloomsbury Set would be proud of.
L’oscar
Another new hotel putting opulence at the forefront is L’oscar, a 39-room luxury property that takes its name from Oscar Wilde. Housed in a Grade II listed former Baptist church, the hotel boasts an eccentric design courtesy of Jacques Garcia – renowned for Hôtel Costes in Paris. Garcia's flamboyant touch is evident in the leather wallpaper, tasselled velvet chairs and outlandish patterned carpet, which sit alongside the building’s original stained-glass windows, Italian columns and stucco ceilings. Biblical terracotta panels on the walls also nod to the property’s former life while the striking octagonal chapel, which dates back to 1903, is now home to Tony Fleming’s Baptist Bar & Grill.
Assembly London
Bringing affordable accommodation to the heart of the city, Assembly London is a new design-led budget hotel on Charing Cross Road. Rooms are inspired by designers Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney and Gareth Pugh with a sophisticated monochrome palette interjected with geometric patterns, neon colours and playful features like pink bunny chairs and provocative artworks. Prices are kept low by omitting fridges, phones and TVs from the rooms but all the necessary features – comfy beds, fast WiFi and power showers – are present. On the roof, the beautiful B&H Garden Room serves food and cocktails and provides panoramic views of London.
The Nadler Covent Garden
Housed in a beautifully restored Edwardian building in Covent Garden, The Nadler is the fifth boutique property in the Nadler Hotels group. Spread over six floors, the 57-room hotel is just a short walk from Charing Cross and Covent Garden stations, and many rooms offer views over the Strand. The building has been meticulously renovated with many original features still intact while rooms showcase British design and craftsmanship with bespoke furniture handmade in west London, fabrics from the Isle of Bute, Scotland and special edition Paul Smith Anglepoise lamps.
Forthcoming new London hotels:
Great Scotland Yard Hotel
Taking over the Grade II-listed original Scotland Yard, which served as the police headquarters from 1829 to 1980, the much-anticipated Great Scotland Yard Hotel is set to open its doors later this year. Having been used during the investigations into Jack The Ripper and made famous by novelists Charles Dickens and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the grand seven-storey building has a rich history and many elements of the new £110 million hotel pay homage to its colourful life. The original red brick Edwardian facade remains, former cells have been converted into rooms, suites and workspaces, and the use of shields, emblems and historic details etched into glass and metalwork nod to its military past. The lower ground floor, where Rudolf Hess is thought to have been interrogated in 1941, has been transformed into a gym while other features include a cocktail bar that sits beneath a striking Lasvit chandelier, an intimate whiskey bar hidden behind secret doors, and a signature restaurant inspired by industrial warehouse architecture.
The Biltmore, Mayfair
Due to open this summer, The Biltmore, Mayfair will be the first European property from Hilton’s luxury brand, LXR Hotels & Resorts. Sitting within Grosvenor Square, in the former location of the Millennium Hotel London Mayfair, the hotel has undergone a £50 million renovation and is now home to 257 guest rooms, many of which offer views over the square, and 51 suites all designed by Goddard Littlefair, known for the Gleneagles Hotel and Hans’ Bar and Grill in No.11 Cadogan Gardens. Restaurant details are yet to be announced but ‘internationally-renowned chefs’ have been promised along with a year-round outdoor terrace, an exclusive cocktail bar and a 500 square metre ballroom with capacity for up to 700 guests.
