I still remember the very first Pharrell song I ever heard: in Spring 2003, I came across MTV’s ‘Making the Video,’ a series whose episodes take viewers behind the scenes of making a music video. This episode, in particular, featured Snoop Dogg’s new single ‘Beautiful’ featuring Pharrell, with on-site filming in Brazil. For many reasons, this episode was captivating: the combination of hip-hop, R&B, and football jerseys encased in a world-class international setting was all I needed to watch the entire episode and fall in love with this track. Fun fact: this video inspired my senior year's 1st Day of School outfit (Priest Holmes' Chiefs jersey outfit). Suffice to say, I’ve paid keen attention to Pharrell’s career since.
In the world of music, Pharrell Williams stands as a pillar of innovation, not only for his chart-topping hits but also for his approach to diverse networking. From collaborating across genres to supporting emerging talent and embracing cultural diversity, Pharrell's career offers invaluable lessons for building inclusive networks in any industry. I want to highlight three key principles from Pharrell's journey and offer some practical tips for incorporating them into your own networking strategy.
1. Collaborate Across Genres & Cross-Functional Networking
Pharrell's ability to seamlessly transition between genres has solidified his reputation as a versatile artist and producer. From hip-hop and R&B to pop and rock, he has left an indelible mark on the music landscape by embracing diverse musical styles and collaborating with artists across the spectrum.
Pharrell's collaboration with Daft Punk on the hit single "Get Lucky" exemplifies his cross-genre appeal. By blending Daft Punk's electronic sound with his own funk-infused style, Pharrell created a crossover hit that resonated with audiences worldwide.
Practical Hack: When attending any event, workshop, or conference, spend a 30-minute lunch or coffee with an attendee who works in a different function than yours.
This will help foster cross-functional collaborations on a more regular basis. By embracing opportunities to learn from individuals with diverse skill sets and perspectives, you’ll be doing the work of expanding your capacity to genuinely interact cross-functionally.
2. Emerging Talent & Cross-Generational Networking
Throughout his career, Pharrell has demonstrated a keen eye for talent, often championing emerging artists and providing them with a platform to showcase their skills. Whether through collaborations, mentorship, or production opportunities, he has played a pivotal role in nurturing the next generation of musicians.
Pharrell's collaboration with Ariana Grande on her album "Sweetener," producing several tracks including the hit single "Blazed," exemplifies his commitment to supporting emerging talent. By working closely with Grande, Pharrell not only contributed to shaping the sound of the album but also helped elevate Grande's already burgeoning career to new heights.

Practical Hack: At your next organizational-wide function, find someone from another generation and commit to asking 12 questions about their career experience.
When you embrace the opportunity to learn from different generations, the fresh perspectives illuminate new ways of considering existing circumstances. This is in addition to the benefit of sharing your own knowledge and experience.
3. Cultural Diversity & Cross-Cultural Networking
Pharrell's music transcends borders, seamlessly incorporating elements of various cultures and traditions into his sound. From Latin rhythms to African beats, he celebrates cultural diversity, showcasing the beauty of global musical influences.
When Pharrell collaborated with Colombian singer J Balvin on the song "Safari," the duo captured the essence of cross-cultural fusion. By blending Pharrell's signature style with Balvin's Latin flair, they created a track that resonated with audiences worldwide, demonstrating the power of cultural unity in music.
Practical Hack: At your next conference or happy hour, seek out opportunities to hear about cross-cultural holidays.
What’s so neat about this is that people actually tap into a very endearing space when describing their holiday experience, actively helping you learn something new while making a genuine connection. By approaching these interactions with curiosity and respect, you can be in a position to learn about different customs, traditions, and perspectives.
