Breaking Barriers While Building Leaders: Reflecting on 2024

As we close out 2024, I find myself reflecting on the themes explored throughout the year as part of “Rompiendo Barreras.” Launching this newsletter was a step outside my comfort zone. Sharing personal lessons from my leadership journey felt both vulnerable and necessary. But as a Latina leader, I know how important it is to tell our stories. Leadership is not just about what we achieve—it’s about inspiring others to see what’s possible. My hope was that these reflections would resonate with others, offering encouragement and insights for their own journeys.

One of the key themes throughout the series is the power of breaking barriers. Whether navigating corporate spaces or leading systemic change in education, I’ve seen how vital it is to challenge inequities and open doors for others. This isn’t always easy, but it’s essential. At Latinos for Education, our work this year reinforced this lesson as we focused on amplifying Latino voices and creating pathways for future leaders whether through our programs or the historic passage of the Educator Diversity Act in Massachusetts. True leadership is not about individual triumphs but is always about achievements made through the collective efforts of many.

This work requires vision—a recurring topic in my reflections. Visionary leadership goes beyond dreaming big; it means translating ambitious ideas for change into action while staying grounded in the realities of those you serve. For me, that has meant driving forward bold initiatives at Latinos for Education that did not exist for our community before and therefore, always guided by the needs of our educators, families, and students.

As leaders, we have the unique privilege—and responsibility—of investing in people who will carry our missions forward, often in much better ways than we ever could have. It is gratifying to see Latino excellence flourish when you recognize strengths, equip your people to adapt and entrust them to carry out their responsibilities with a high commitment to quality.

Of course, none of this can happen without balance. In our pursuit of change, it’s easy to lose sight of the need to care for ourselves. One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that prioritizing wellness is not just an act of self-care—it’s a responsibility we owe to those we lead. This year reminded me that when we show up as whole, healthy leaders, we create the conditions for our teams to thrive too.

Embracing identity also emerged as a powerful theme in this series. As a Latina, my cultural heritage has profoundly shaped how I lead. For many of us, our identities are central to how we see the world and approach challenges. This year, I encouraged others to embrace their Latinidad as a strength, rather than something to overcome. When we lead authentically, we not only inspire trust but also create spaces where others feel empowered to do the same.

Throughout all of this, gratitude has been the thread that ties everything together. Reflecting on this year, I am deeply thankful for the educators, parents, and students who inspire our work and for my team who works hard every day to make an impact.  Gratitude reminds us to stay grounded and connected—it fuels the relationships and trust that make leadership impactful.

Stepping outside my comfort zone to share these reflections has been a rewarding experience. It reminded me that leadership is a continuous journey—one that evolves as we grow, learn, and give back.

As we look ahead to 2025, I encourage you to reflect on how these themes show up in your own leadership. How do you nurture your vision, develop talent, prioritize your wellness, embrace your identity, and practice gratitude? By taking time to consider these questions, you will be better equipped to lead with intention and impact in the year ahead. Together, as stronger leaders, we can shape a future of opportunity for the next generation. See you all in 2025.

Well said, and wishing you continued success in 2025.

The balancing act is crucial- when we fall out of balance as leaders, it can put the whole team/org/group/our families out of whack, too. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and perspective, Amanda.
