Brexit - Cornish Businesses Have Your Say - Poll Closed Results Below

The poll asked which preferred route respondents in Cornish business would like the Brexit issue to take. The results are:-

"The May Deal" = 14%

"Leave the EU on the 29/03/2019 if necessary with no deal" = 40%

"A Second Referendum" = 44%

"Other" = 2%

Those asking for the "May Deal" to be implemented, were almost entirely supporters of Brexit. All of the "Other" votes were asking for a renegotiation and then leave, so again for Brexit. If these figures were reflected in a "Peoples Vote" then the result would be almost exactly what it was in 2016.

"Creating Opportunities for Businesses in Line With Their Needs and Ambitions"

As an organisation we are not political and do not claim to represent member businesses. What we are happy to do, is communicate your views to the corridors of power, on topics that effect Cornwall and its economy.

We would like to know how you feel about the next move with Brexit. We will then communicate your thoughts to your MP, before the vote on Tuesday. To help us, help you, please complete the short survey through this link BREXIT YOUR VIEWS (Closed)

Why are we asking you for your views now?

Cornwall Chamber of Commerce have written to all of our MPs urging them to support the "May Deal" on the basis of "anecdotal research" whatever that is.

Cornwall Council have voted to support a call for a "Peoples Vote", a second referendum, although they have not said what that vote should be between, but it should have an option to "Remain" in it.

Three of our six MPs have said they will vote against the "May Deal" next week. One has said he is likely to do the same and the remaining two who are part of the cabinet, look likely to support Mrs May.

There are undoubtedly strong opinions on both sides of the argument and what we want to do is give you the opportunity to communicate your views to your respective MPs before the all important vote next week.

From my personal conversations with member businesses, I have found very little support for the "May Deal", hence why I am sceptical of the Cornwall Chamber view, but I could be wrong and I am certainly not in a position to represent business on this. There is certainly an argument to say that the deal was always going to be a compromise, so some say we should move forward with this if it is the best we can get.

The Brexitors I have spoken to believe the "May Deal" is worse than "No Deal" and hence want to exit the EU on the 29th March next year, if necessary on WTO rules and negotiate from there. They all accept this will incur a difficult period of adjustment, but they cite examples like Switzerland as being in Europe, but not part of the EU. Switzeralnd is tremendously successful with trade both in and outside EU. Apparently, per capita Switzerland exports five time what the UK does to the EU.

The Remainers I speak to, say that every credible financial assessment of Brexit says that we will be worse off outside the EU. They say that because we know so much more than we did in 2016, people will have changed their view and want to stay part of the EU.

Whatever your viewpoints, we would like you to complete this very quick survey and then we will endeavour to communicate all of your views to your respective MP before the vote next week. In order to complete the survey please click on the following link.

Surely it is now clear that Mrs May's "deal" is dead. Is it time she stopped wasting any more time with the EU, who have made it abundantly clear, there will be no more negotiation and started shouting from the rooftops "PREPARE FOR NO DEAL" time is running out.

The whole political focus on #Brexit at the moment is on the backstop agreement for Northern Ireland. This was not mentioned in any of the comments to MPs through our survey. It would appear that there is very much more missing from the "May Deal" that people are not happy with. There were comments in our survey about the divorce bill; loss of voting and veto rights; rules being made for us; the lack of ability to strike new trade deals. I am also amazed that no tests of the "May Deal" and its constituent parts have been made to see whether they would gain approval of the UK parliament. I have sent a tweet to Donald Tusk to this effect. Whatever your justifiably held viewpoint (In or Out), dissatisfaction with our politicians and the EU seems to be universal. More turmoil started today with the vote of no confidence in Mrs May.

Hi Kevin I would just like to think the politicians can stop point scoring and find a way to end all this uncertainty by pulling together to find a way to implement the will of the people to leave without a cliff edge.

Interesting poll Kevin, thanks very much for running and for passing on the results to our MPs.  The most interesting thing for me is that both the result and the margin are virtually the same as the original 2016 vote in Cornwall, whatever your views on Brexit, either for or against.  So 2.5 years of politicians' arguing, going round & round in circles to end up with the farcical situation we have in Parliament today with the Government predicted to be facing a heavy defeat & noone has the foggiest as to what will happen by 29 March 2019 and peoples' views are largely identical!!!
