Every 10 November, the United Nations celebrate World Science Day for Peace and Development to highlight the important role of science in society and the need to involve the citizens of all nations in debates on rising scientific challenges. It also emphasizes the importance of science in our daily lives.

By connecting science more closely with communities across the globe, World Science Day for Peace and Development strives to guarantee that citizens are kept apprised of progress & recent developments in science. It also stresses the role our experts and scientists play in expanding our knowledge of the remarkable, fragile planet we call home and in making our societies more sustainable.

How We Can Contribute Towards This Day

There are many ways in which we can help create a greener tomorrow, like:

  • Strengthening public awareness of the role of science for friendly and sustainable societies;
  • Promoting national and international solidarity for shared science between nations;
  • Renewing national and international commitment for the use of science for the good of societies;
  • Drawing attention to the hurdles faced by science in raising support for the scientific endeavour.

The Day also offers the opportunity to mobilize all actors around the topic of science for peace and development – from government officials to the media to school pupils. This year's theme for World Science Day for Peace and Development is "Building Climate-Ready Communities". Climate change has become a dangerous threat to the lives of billions of people and the planet today. Therefore, the goal of this year's theme is to bring science closer to society by increasing the knowledge and awareness of the general public. The way forward is by highlighting scientific aspects and possible solutions provided by science, technology, and innovation to some of the global challenges society faces today.
