Building Food Security and Fighting Malnutrition with Climate-Smart Agriculture
In Tiaty East, one of the ASAL sub-counties in Baringo County, Kenya, high levels of malnutrition, food insecurity, and poverty have long impacted the community. Frequent water and pasture shortages threaten not only livestock livelihood but also fuel conflicts with neighbouring areas, intensifying these challenges. Women and children bear the brunt of these hardships, often struggling to access enough nutritious food.
With support from Sida , Action Against Hunger is empowering communities through Mother-to-Mother Support Groups and other local initiatives focused on producing and increasing access to nutritious food through the establishment of kitchen gardens that are climate resilient. By introducing Climate-Smart Agriculture Practices such as adopting drought-tolerant seed varieties, promoting organic and Conservation agriculture, using water-efficient and climate-smart irrigation technologies, we’re helping households grow diverse crops, improving both food security and nutrition.
To ensure long-term health and nutrition gains, Action against Hunger further provides these groups with nutrition-sensitive information, focusing on Maternal, Infant, and Young Child Nutrition (MIYCN) along with training on good hygiene practices that complement these efforts, equipping mothers with essential skills aimed to boost both their health and that of their children. These integrated practices have transformed the area, increasing access to fresh, green vegetables, boosting household food supplies and building a foundation for healthier and more resilient communities.
