Building the Future: Reflections from the 2024 Public Architects Convention

Leadership for the Public Architecture Committee

The Public Architecture Committee

Public architects have been a part of federal architecture history since the late 18th century. The first known committee was organized roughly in the 1950s, with roots in the Washington D.C area. The committee started as “Architects in Government” but eventually became “Public Architects” to promote inclusivity. Today, the PA committee has a current membership of 5,500 individuals and continues to champion excellence in public architecture. I’ve had the honor of being a part of the leadership in the committee at the federal level. Our mission is clear: to elevate the role of the public architect as a pivotal force in the sustainable, resilient, and inclusive planning, design, construction, and management of public facilities. This convention was a testament to that mission, offering a diverse array of panels, workshops, and networking opportunities designed to foster professional growth and collaboration.

The Value Public Architects Bring

One of the highlights of the convention was the opportunity to serve as a panelist. Sharing the stage with Phillip Neuberg, Leslie Kahn, Dr. Adam Patelimon-Negurt, Ludmilla Pavlova-Gillham, and Paula Loomis, who have all practiced at multiple levels of government and with distinct specialties, was an enriching experience. Each panelist brought a unique perspective, reflecting the multifaceted nature of public service that comes with our profession. These discussions displayed the vital role public architects play in shaping communities that are not only functional but also equitable and inclusive.

I personally spoke about designs that allowed me to serve the public. For example, Bachman Recreation Center in Dallas, Texas. This is the only rec center in Dallas that serves the special-needs population - it provides support for not just rec activities but also job placement in the workforce. The opportunities my projects can create for those in need or less fortunate makes all of the hard work fulfilling.

PA Knowledge Communities and Growth

The PA is actively working to broaden the membership of its Knowledge Communities (KCs) across local, state, and federal levels. With a range of in-person and online educational sessions, the PA is ensuring that members develop and learn from each other. These learning opportunities are designed to keep us at the forefront of innovation and best practices, whether we are seasoned professionals or new to the field. The PA aims to increase membership and increase collaboration with the AIA on important and relevant issues, such as climate action, research, or just preparing a new generation.

Closing Thoughts

The 2024 Public Architects Convention was an insightful gathering of minds dedicated to the future of public architecture. As we broaden our Knowledge Communities, enhance professional education, and collaborate on critical issues, we reinforce the essential role public architects play in shaping resilient, sustainable, and inclusive communities. I'm proud to be part of this dynamic community and look forward to contributing to its ongoing legacy of excellence and public service.
