After years of planning, we have launched a football academy in South Africa - Pelucha Sports Academy. This academy represents a mission to change the lives of young, talented players who come from disadvantaged backgrounds. South Africa holds a special place in my life, both personally and professionally. Beyond my family connections—my wife is South African, and I’ve done a great deal of work there—the country is full of incredible talent and resilience. Yet, the gap between opportunity and access is still very much present, especially in football.

Many football academies in the region operate on a pay-to-play model. This means that even if a young player has immense talent, if their family cannot afford the fees, they lose out on the opportunity to pursue their dreams. After more than a decade without a South African player making it to Europe’s top leagues, it became clear to me that the issue isn’t talent—it’s access.

That’s why we created this academy. To ensure that talented young players, regardless of their financial background, have the opportunity to succeed. Our academy is built on a means-tested model, where financial need is considered, and full scholarships are available. It’s all about giving these kids a fair shot. With over one million dollars invested into the academy, we have ensured that talent is the price of admission, not simply who can afford it.
