Imagine if you could instantly connect with your clients on a deeper level, make your communications feel more personalized, and grow your legal practice effortlessly.
What if I told you that a simple psychological trick could help you achieve all of this and more?
Enter the ‘Barnum effect’.
Let’s explore together how understanding and leveraging this phenomenon can elevate your legal practice and personal brand.
Ready?
So as always, let me first answer the fundamental question:
What is the ‘Barnum Effect’?
The Barnum effect describes our tendency to accept vague and general statements as uniquely applicable to ourselves.
This effect is commonly seen in horoscopes, psychic readings, and personality tests etc and named after the famous showman P.T. Barnum, who famously knew how to make people feel special.
This phenomenon can be harnessed in the legal and professional world to create a stronger connection with clients.
Let me explain. But first:
Why Should You Care?
For professionals like you and me, understanding the Barnum effect can make a significant impact on how you engage with clients and build your practice.
So, to make sure we are on the same page, here are three reasons why this psychological phenomenon matters:
Reason #1: Enhanced Client Relationships
Do you know what is the direct result of making clients feel understood and valued? You deepen their trust and loyalty.
In fact, based on my experience personalized communication that resonates can make clients feel that their concerns are genuinely being addressed.
Reason #2: Increased Client Retention
This reason by itself worth learning more about the Barnum effect.
When clients perceive that you understand their unique needs and situations, they are more likely to stick with your services. This perception can lead to higher client retention rates, repeat business, and positive referrals. Isn’t that what you really want?
Reason #3: Effective Business Development Advantage
Utilizing the Barnum effect can set you apart from competitors. Yes, it is true.
By ensuring your business development efforts feel tailored to individual clients, you can attract more potential clients who feel personally addressed and more inclined to choose your service.
So, now that you know at least 3 important reasons let me share with you what can you do to leverage the Barnum effect to grow your practice:
Practical Steps to Leverage the Barnum Effect
You need to understand that harnessing the Barnum effect requires strategic communication and thoughtful personalization. Here’s my advice how you can apply this effect to your legal practice:
1. Customize Your Communication
Emails and Newsletters: I use this step with many of the lawyers and other professionals I mentor. We craft emails and newsletters that use personal-sounding language.
It is interesting to find that by addressing the recipient directly and using phrases like “just for you” makes the information feel bespoke even if it's broadly applicable.
So, consider segmenting your connection to priority lists to send more targeted messages that highlight common concerns relevant to specific client groups (or priority lists).
2. Create General but Relatable Content
Blog Posts and Articles: This is advice I share with all my mentees - learn to write about universal (legal) concerns with a twist that makes the reader feel it pertains to their specific situation.
For instance, an article titled “Top Legal Challenges New Entrepreneurs Face (And How You Can Overcome Them)” can feel highly relevant to many new business owners, even though the advice is broadly applicable.

3. Engage in Personalized Marketing
Social Media Posts: If you are active on social media (and I think you should) you can also use the Barnum effect while writing your posts by addressing prevalent concerns among potential clients.
For example, statements like, “Dealing with expanding your company’s services? We’re here to support you every step of the way,” can resonate deeply.
I suggest tailoring your messaging to different demographics based on insights from client data and other social media metrics.
Next piece of advice:
4. Tailor Client Interactions
Face-to-Face Meetings: This advice is applicable to almost every professional. While meeting your clients face-to-face for advice, use statements that make clients feel understood, such as, “Many clients worry about the complexity of legal procedures, but here’s how we simplify the process just for you.”
Another action you can take that can also reinforce the Barnum effect during your meetings with your clients is personalized questions and responses during meetings/
5. Use Feedback Effectively
Client Reviews and Testimonials: Another effective way to use the Barnum effect in your practice business development is to highlight client testimonials with Barnum-like statements, such as “I felt they genuinely understood my case and needs.”
By doing so, this can appeal to future clients by suggesting they will receive the same level of personalized service.
Conclusion
By understanding and using the Barnum effect, lawyers and other professionals can significantly enhance their personal brand and strengthen client relationships.
It’s all about making your communications feel special and tailored.
By integrating these practical steps, that I shared with you in this edition into your practice, you’ll not only connect more deeply with your clients but also differentiate yourself in a competitive market.
