Welcome to the first edition of "Level Up with Lewis"!
In this newsletter, we’ll explore essential business English vocabulary from A to Z.
Each word comes with example sentences in both English and Spanish to help you understand and use them effectively, so...let's dive in! 😉
A - Agenda
= A list of items to be discussed at a meeting.
🇬🇧 The first item on the agenda is the sales report.
🇪🇸 El primer punto en la agenda es el informe de ventas.
B - Benchmark
= A standard or point of reference against which things may be compared.
🇬🇧 We need to establish benchmarks to measure our progress.
🇪🇸 Necesitamos establecer puntos de referencia para medir nuestro progreso.
C - Consensus
= General agreement.
🇬🇧 The team reached a consensus on the new project plan.
🇪🇸 El equipo llegó a un consenso sobre el nuevo plan del proyecto.
D - Deadline
= The latest time or date by which something should be completed.
🇬🇧 The deadline for the report submission is Friday.
🇪🇸 La fecha límite para la entrega del informe es el viernes.
E - Equity
= The value of shares issued by a company.
🇬🇧 She decided to invest in the company's equity.
🇪🇸 Ella decidió invertir en el capital de la empresa.
F - Feedback
= Information about reactions to a product or a person's performance of a task.
🇬🇧 We appreciate your feedback on our new service.
🇪🇸 Agradecemos sus comentarios sobre nuestro nuevo servicio.
G - Growth
= The process of increasing in size, value, or importance.
🇬🇧 Our company has seen significant growth this year.
🇪🇸 Nuestra empresa ha visto un crecimiento significativo este año.
H - Hedge
= An investment to reduce the risk of adverse price movements in an asset.
🇬🇧 They hedged their investment to protect against market fluctuations.
🇪🇸 Cubrieron su inversión para protegerse contra las fluctuaciones del mercado.
I - Innovation
= The introduction of new ideas, products, or methods.
🇬🇧 Innovation is key to staying competitive in the market.
🇪🇸 La innovación es clave para mantenerse competitivo en el mercado.
J - Joint Venture
= A commercial enterprise undertaken jointly by two or more parties which otherwise retain their distinct identities.
🇬🇧 The companies formed a joint venture to enter the Asian market.
🇪🇸 Las empresas formaron una empresa conjunta para entrar en el mercado asiático.
K - KPI (Key Performance Indicator)
= A measurable value that demonstrates how effectively a company is achieving key business objectives.
🇬🇧 Customer satisfaction is an important KPI for our team.
🇪🇸 La satisfacción del cliente es un indicador clave de rendimiento importante para nuestro equipo.
L - Leverage
= The use of various financial instruments or borrowed capital to increase the potential return of an investment.
🇬🇧 They leveraged their assets to expand the business.

M - Market Share
= The portion of a market controlled by a particular company or product.
🇬🇧 Our goal is to increase our market share by 10%.

N - Negotiation
= Discussion aimed at reaching an agreement.
🇬🇧 The negotiation took several hours but was ultimately successful.

O - Outsource
= Obtain (goods or a service) from an outside or foreign supplier.
🇬🇧 They decided to outsource their IT services to reduce costs.

P - Proactive
= Creating or controlling a situation by causing something to happen rather than responding to it after it has happened.
🇬🇧 Being proactive in addressing customer complaints can improve satisfaction.

Q - Quota
= A limited or fixed number or amount of people or things.
🇬🇧 The sales team met their quota for the month.

R - ROI (Return on Investment)
= A measure used to evaluate the efficiency of an investment.
🇬🇧 The ROI on our latest project exceeded expectations.

S - Synergy
= The interaction or cooperation of two or more organizations to produce a combined effect greater than the sum of their separate effects.
🇬🇧 The merger created significant synergy between the two companies.

T - Turnover
= The amount of money taken by a business in a particular period.
🇬🇧 The company's turnover increased by 20% last year.

U - Utilize
= Make practical and effective use of.
🇬🇧 We need to utilize all available resources to meet our goals.

V - Venture Capital
= Capital invested in a project in which there is a substantial element of risk.
🇬🇧 They raised venture capital to launch their startup.

W - Workflow
= The sequence of processes through which a piece of work passes from initiation to completion.
🇬🇧 We need to streamline our workflow to improve efficiency.

X - eXpertise
= Expert skill or knowledge in a particular field.
🇬🇧 Her expertise in marketing is highly valued.

Y - Yield
= Produce or provide (a natural, agricultural, or industrial product).
🇬🇧 The investment is expected to yield high returns.
🇪🇸 Se espera que la inversión produzca altos rendimientos.
Z - Zero-sum
= A situation in which one party's gain is exactly balanced by another party's loss.
🇬🇧 Negotiating a zero-sum deal means there’s no net benefit for both sides.
🇪🇸 Negociar un acuerdo de suma cero significa que no hay beneficio neto para ambas partes.
Common Mistakes:
Mixing up "affect" and "effect." Remember, "affect" is a verb, and "effect" is a noun.
Language-Learning Tip: Practice makes perfect! Try to use at least five new words from this list in your daily business conversations this week.
