Can eating this cure depression?

A new scientific study into the Mediterranean diet may reveal a potent weapon for the battle against depression.

Read below to find out more.

Your depression will go away by eating this

Exercise has always been lauded for its positive effects on mental health. and now, a popular dietary approach is showcasing its potential to enhance mood.

As per recent studies, a Mediterranean-style diet may contribute to alleviating symptoms of depression, with some participants experiencing significant improvements that they were deemed to be in remission.

Researchers conducted a meta-analysis involving more than 1,500 individuals exhibiting depressive symptoms ranging from moderate to severe. The analysis comprised five studies with interventions lasting from six to 48 weeks. It revealed promising outcomes.

Some experts theorize that the Mediterranean diet could positively impact gut bacteria, which in turn influence chemical signals sent to the brain.

By fostering the growth of beneficial bacteria while reducing harmful ones, this dietary pattern may shift the balance of signals to the brain in a manner conducive to reducing depressive symptoms.

However,  it is important to refrain from conclusions at this point. The evidence suggests that adopting a Mediterranean-style diet may offer a valuable behavioral strategy in the battle against depression.

The Mediterranean diet typically prioritizes whole grains, vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, olive oil, and seafood, while incorporating moderate amounts of poultry and low-fat dairy. It limits the intake of refined sugar, butter, and processed meats. This could be the reason behind this observation of meta-analysis.

For those of you interested in trying this approach, you can always start with a simple pita bread and hummus recipe from YouTube.

Take this test to avoid a heart attack

Tests are certainly not everyone's favorite activity. But, the Coronary Calcium Score (CAC) is one examination you'll likely want to prioritize.

The CAC has revolutionized preventative cardiology by quantifying the accumulation of calcium in coronary arteries. As explained by cardiologist Dr. Danielle Belardo, this calcium build-up serves as an indicator of plaque accumulation and can help assess your risk for future cardiovascular events, such as heart attacks or strokes.

Studies suggest that over 80 percent of heart disease cases are preventable with early detection and preventive measures.

Despite this, many individuals, including ourselves, are unaware of this examination. Unlike other scans, the CAC is noninvasive (requiring no IV contrast), involves low radiation exposure (similar to a mammogram), and provides unique insights that cannot be obtained through blood tests alone.

As described by Dr. Belardo, the CAC functions as a crystal ball, offering a glimpse into your cardiovascular future.

If you're considering undergoing a screening Calcium Score, it's advisable to discuss the possibility with your healthcare provider.

Based on factors such as your age, medical history, family history, and other variables, your physician can help determine whether a CAC scan would be beneficial for you.

At the very least, the CAC can offer peace of mind or prompt adjustments to your daily activities and diet that could potentially save your life.

As a psychiatrist, with a focus on the treatment of depressive disorders, I have not yet seen that any kind of diet could alleviate depressive symptoms. What I experience is that the hope that a diet could alleviate the depressive symptoms only prolongs their suffering. Your suggestion to the people suffering from depression to try this approach and start with a simple pita bread and hummus recipe from YouTube is mildly said unserious.
