Canada to Increase Application and Processing Fees for Visitor, Worker, and Student Applications - Effective December 1!

Starting December 1, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will increase application and processing fees for several types of temporary resident applications. These fee changes apply to individuals seeking to extend their status or gain entry into Canada, including those applying for the restoration of temporary resident status and other related permits.

Applications Affected by Fee Increases

The following application types will see a fee increase:

  • Restoration of Temporary Resident Status (for visitors, workers, and students)
  • Authorization to Return to Canada
  • Criminal Rehabilitation Applications (including those for serious criminality)
  • Temporary Resident Permit (TRP) Applications

While the exact fee increases have not been announced yet, applicants should be prepared for adjustments in the costs.

What Happens if Clients Have Paid the Old Fee?

If applicants have already submitted their applications with the old fees before the fee increase takes effect, they typically don’t need to worry about paying the new fees, provided their application is complete.

  • Online Applications: When applying online, submissions are processed immediately. This ensures that the application is confirmed as valid upon submission.
  • Paper Applications: For paper applications, there may be a delay between when the documents are mailed and when IRCC receives them. In such cases, the new fees may apply. However, if the applicant:

then their application will generally not be rejected. Should additional payment be required due to the fee increase, IRCC will provide instructions on how to pay the difference.

How to Pay the Fee Difference After the Fee Change

In situations where a paper application was submitted with the old fee and a fee increase occurs, applicants will be asked to pay the difference. Here’s how to handle it:

  1. Calculate the Fee Difference: Applicants must determine the difference between the old fee and the new fee. This includes any applicable changes for family members included in the application.
  2. Make the Payment:
  3. Obtain a Receipt: Once the payment is made, a receipt will be issued for each payment. Applicants must log into their IRCC account to complete the payment process.
  4. Submit the Receipt: After receiving the receipt, follow the instructions provided by IRCC to submit the payment confirmation and complete the application.

Conclusion

As of December 1, applicants should be aware that the fees for certain Canadian temporary resident applications will increase. It’s important to check for updated fees before submitting applications or making any payments. If applicants have already paid the old fee and the fee changes after submission, they may be asked to pay the difference, and IRCC will provide clear instructions on how to do so.
