Canadian cities rank among best in the world for quality of life in 2024

Vancouver Shines in Mercer’s 2024 Quality of Living Survey

In Mercer's annual Quality of Living survey, Vancouver has been recognized as one of the world’s best cities for quality of life. It claimed the top spot in North America, ranked seventh globally and tied with Frankfurt, Germany.

The city in British Columbia also improved its global position, climbing from eighth place in the 2023 rankings.

Mercer’s survey evaluates international workers' and their families' daily living conditions, considering factors like safety, healthcare, infrastructure, and education.

Four additional Canadian cities were featured among the top 25 in Mercer’s 2024 rankings, further highlighting Canada’s strong appeal for high-quality living.

Canadian Cities Outshine Global Competitors in Quality of Living

Canadian cities, including Vancouver, outperformed several world-renowned American cities in Mercer’s 2024 Quality of Living rankings. Notably, San Francisco (#36), Los Angeles (#44), New York (#45), and Washington DC (#49) all ranked significantly lower.

Mercer’s survey highlights cities that “stand out for their exceptional living standards, robust infrastructure, and vibrant cultural scenes.” The rankings consider a broad range of factors influencing quality of life, such as:

  • Housing
  • Recreation
  • Socio-cultural environment
  • Purchasing power and cost conventions
  • Travel and traffic
  • Air quality
  • Access to education
  • Political stability
  • Healthcare

With multiple Canadian cities in the top 25, the rankings emphasize Canada’s strong global reputation for offering outstanding living conditions.

Cost of Living: A Key Consideration

Mercer’s survey emphasizes the importance of cost of living for both employees and corporations in determining a city’s overall appeal.

“The most successful destinations today are those that blend flexible governance around mobile talent with a high quality of life and an affordable cost of living,” the report states.

Despite its high ranking for quality of life, Vancouver remains relatively affordable compared to other global cities. According to Mercer’s 2024 cost-of-living data, Vancouver ranks 101st among the world’s costliest cities for international workers. This balance of livability and affordability reinforces Vancouver’s position as a top destination for international talent.

Canada’s Top Cities Recognized

Mercer’s survey highlights Vancouver as one of the top 10 cities globally, celebrated for its moderate climate, recreational opportunities, and cosmopolitan lifestyle.

Vince Cordova, Mercer’s partner for Mobility Advisory Services in North America, praised the distinct qualities of Canadian cities featured in the rankings:

  • Vancouver: Access to nature and abundant recreation options.
  • Toronto: Unmatched cultural diversity.
  • Ottawa: Close proximity to Parliament and national institutions.
  • Montreal: Historic downtown charm.
  • Calgary: A robust job market and economic opportunities.

“Canada continues to be a leading destination for international assignees,” Cordova added, “offering access to a wide range of benefits through its cities and overall quality of life.”

These recognitions underscore Canada’s growing appeal as a destination for global talent.
