This Candidate Got an Offer Every Time - Here's How.

I always get asked for my best interview tips.

The truth is... It Depends.

  • What type of Role are you Interviewing for? Is it a leadership one?
  • What type of Company? A Fortune 100? A Startup?
  • What industry?
  • Who are you interviewing with?
  • How many employees do they have? Are you one of the first hires?
  • Are you replacing someone?

And so on...

BUT - There is a gold standard tip I can share for ANY of these interviews. And it's so good that one of my candidates has used her for her entire career (4 jobs) and ALWAYS gets the offer.

She researched the company like it was her JOB! She acted like a curious journalist and scoured every source she could for details about the company. This perfectionist even studied the complaints and negative articles written about the company so she could design her questions creatively to the interviewer.

There is a delicate balance here.

The INTERVIEWER wants to feel 'in-control.' As they are in the 'power' seat and don't want you to necessarily turn the tables on them. This requires skill and tact on your behalf to read the type of person you are meeting with (we can teach you this - just ask us).

A few of her top tips?

  1. Dive Deep into the Company’s History: Don’t just skim the “About Us” page—dig into their founding story, major milestones, and even any challenges they’ve faced. Understanding the company’s journey shows that you’re genuinely invested in their future.
  2. Know the Industry Trends: She didn't just focus on the company but also on the broader industry. "I see this is happening in the market - what do you think about this? I know Blank and Blank are your competition and they recently did this. How does this impact you? Knowing the landscape allows you to ask insightful questions and position yourself as a strategic hire.
  3. Personalize Your Questions: She tailored her questions to each interviewer based on their role and background. For instance, if interviewing with the CFO, she asked about how recent specific financial strategies were impacting long-term or short-term growth. This approach not only impressed the interviewer but also demonstrated her ability to think critically about the business.
  4. BE SPECIFIC - Let's pretend that I'm interviewing at Oracle. Here's an example of a question that I would ask (remember - these have NOTHING to do with the role): "With the shift towards cloud-based solutions, how is Oracle positioning itself against competitors like AWS and Microsoft Azure? Are the key differentiators like Oracle’s Autonomous Database and OCI what you focus on when approaching potential clients?"

The key takeaway? Preparation isn’t just about knowing the company—It's about UNDERSTANDING THE BUSINESS!

And remember, the more prepared you are, the more confident you’ll be. Confidence is contagious, and it often makes the difference between a good interview and a great one.
