CCDM News and Updates - September 2024
New tools in the toolbox for fungicide resistance detection
Our fungicide resistance team have developed a new method using the portable Oxford Nanopore Technologies MinION DNA sequencing device, enabling the detection of both known and novel mutations in just one test.
Kat Zulak , lead researcher in this project, shared that this innovative approach simplifies the detection process, providing a comprehensive map of mutations, including those that could go unnoticed with traditional methods.
This research, published in Scientific Reports, not only accelerates our current efforts but also builds a genetic resource for future studies.
AFREN Workshops: Horsham, Melbourne, Wagga Wagga and Dubbo!
The past few months, AFREN have hosted collaborative two-day workshops in various locations across the country!
We had the pleasure of hearing from speakers such as Hari Dadu, Joshua Fanning, Angela Van de Wouw, Brad Baxter, Steven Simpfendorfer and Nick Poole. The sessions also heard key research updates in the fungicide resistance space, delivered by Fran Lopez-Ruiz and @Anna-Sheree Krige from the CCDM.
Our experts ensured attending agronomists had the latest tools and knowledge to share with growers to tackle any challenges in the field this season.
It was a fantastic turnout with ample networking and discussion opportunities throughout these GRDC supported workshops. Thank you to everyone who participated and assisted.

Congratulations to Dr Fatima Naim, Curtin University’s Faculty of Science and Engineering’s Mid-Career Scientist of the Year!
Fatima Naim 's groundbreaking research on plant disease resistance and data management is paving the way for more durable crops. Her work includes pioneering calcium redistribution studies in wheat using high-resolution microscopy at the Australian Synchrotron.
Fatima has also formed a unique collaboration with Genomics WA that has resulted in the deployment of new genomic technologies to solve agricultural problems, including rich datasets that provide new insights into disease dynamics not previously available.
Leading the Grains Research and Development Corporation funded DataHarvest project, she is helping to ensure that research data generated from GRDC investments are collected and stored in a way that makes them easy to find, access and reuse, accelerating new research outcomes with improved efficiency and less duplication. This project is now well underway, with her team currently connecting with GRDC research partners across Australia to build capacity and capability in the management of grains research data
The Curtin award recognises research excellence through demonstration of a track record of consistently securing external research funding, top quality publications as well as national and international collaborations, and engagement with external stakeholders and communities in developing and delivering research. Join us in celebrating Fatima’s incredible achievements! 👏
Congratulations to our CCDM students on receiving WA Agricultural Research Collaboration scholarships
WA Agricultural Research Collaboration has announced its first cohort of 23 postgraduate scholarship students as part of a new program to inspire future leaders and grow agricultural innovation in the State.
Congratulations to our CCDM students, Sabrina Cuellar, Sundara Link and Varthini Govindaraju Punithan on receiving a WAARC scholarship.
Good Luck to Johannes Debler in the FameLab Australia 2024 Final
Johannes Wolfram Debler will be presenting his exciting research on "Investigating the interactions between fungal diseases of lentil and chickpea with their host" in the FameLab national final, competing alongside early-career researchers from across Australia.

FameLab is a public science communication competition and training program, designed to promote excellence in science communication for early career STEM researchers in universities, government, and industry.
The FameLab Australia final is set to take place in September at the WA Museum Boola Bardip, with the winner going on to represent Australia at the international final in November 2024.
Good luck to Johannes for the finals on 26 September.
Mingenew, Dowerin and Newdegate Field Days
CCDM have had a great few months getting involved in the Mingenew Midwest Expo , Dowerin Machinery Field Days , and Newdegate Machinery Field Day alongside the Grains Research and Development Corporation .
Over 6 days, 15 of our dedicated staff engaged with growers and industry professionals, sparking great conversations about crops, disease, and our latest research.
We had growers and industry testing their knowledge to guess the grains and some budding young scientists at our stall giving DNA extractions a go! A massive thank you to all the staff who made this possible and to everyone who stopped by to chat.
Precision Agriculture Pipelines | C4AP | 10 Years of CCDM Research
Discover how the Curtin 4 Agribusiness Profitability (C4AP) team is supporting farm businesses to make more profit from their data as Julia Easton and Arnold Salvacion discuss the development of foundational pipelines for ingesting, processing, and visualizing yield data. Working closely with growers and industry, their team is working to produce user-friendly digital tools to support decision making on farm.
Fungicide Resistance Monitoring | 10 Years of CCDM Research
Since the first Australian discovery of fungicide resistance in 2010, research at CCDM has continuously focused on finding solutions for growers faced with fungicide resistance on their properties.
In this special video, take a journey and explore the development of fungicide resistance detection technologies with Fran Lopez-Ruiz, Wesley Mair and Kat Zulak . These technologies make it possible to keep up with this constantly evolving issue and now, industry is much better equipped with knowledge on how resistance develops, and how to reduce the risk of it developing further.
