Celebrating the 100th Edition of the Navigating the Twenties Newsletter
Hello Navigators!
It’s hard to believe that we’ve reached the 100th edition of the "Navigating the Twenties" (NTT) Newsletter. When I launched this journey on June 14, 2023, at the age of 28, I was seeking answers on how to navigate the final stretch of my twenties. In my quest, I reached out to other twenty-somethings in my network to share their advice on self-identity, relationships, and careers. Today, as we celebrate this milestone, I want to reflect on the recurring themes and valuable insights we've gathered.
Discovering Self-Identity
One of the most poignant conversations I had was with Chaeli Mycroft , who realized during therapy that her pursuit of a PhD was driven by a desire to prove herself, not by genuine passion. “I could be a doctor right now if I wanted to,” she said, “but I don't want to. And that's okay.” This insight reminds us to pursue what truly resonates with us, not what we think we should achieve to meet others' expectations. Similarly, Mpumelelo Mhlongo , born with amniotic band syndrome, embraced his uniqueness and became a Paralympic athlete, challenging us to view our perceived limitations as unique strengths. Thato Pule shared her struggle with self-identity, emphasizing the importance of self-compassion and viewing failure as a stepping stone rather than a setback. In our survey, 56.3% of readers found personal identity to be one of the most challenging aspects of their twenties.
Navigating Relationships
Thuso Kuali emphasized the importance of self-awareness in relationships, urging us to understand our predispositions and biases to avoid self-sabotage. Navigating relationships in our twenties is complex, and simple self-awareness can make a significant difference in maintaining healthy relationships. Brian A. “Drew” Chalker beautifully described the different types of relationships we encounter: those for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. Understanding this can help us navigate relationships more effectively, knowing when to let go and when to hold on.
Career Insights
Kerryn Gammie shared the challenges of being queer in the corporate world during her twenties, highlighting the importance of intersectionality in workplace conversations about LGBTQIA+ issues. Punky Ring CA(SA) ’s journey from Durban, South Africa, to a career in renewable energy in Norway is truly inspiring. Her story reminds us that it's never too late to pursue what truly excites us. Bronwyn Williams examined the trade-offs between corporate conformity and personal freedom, challenging the notion that a secure nine-to-five job is the ultimate goal and pointing out the loss of personal freedom in exchange for perceived security. Ofentse Monnaruri ’s passion for medicine highlights the importance of following our passions and finding joy in our chosen paths, even when the journey gets tough. Tshego Putu emphasized the importance of embracing one’s unique voice, especially for minorities in their industries.
