BE THE CHANGE
"Be the change that you wish to see in the world.” - Mahamat Ghandi
On Sunday, July 21st, our political world was shaken. At 1:46 p.m., President Biden announced via social media that he was withdrawing from the 2024 presidential race and soon after, he endorsed VP Kamala Harris for President. Like many others, I was shocked! This was the beginning of the end of his political career. He has been a public servant for over 50 years. to gave in to those who had She is the first Black female conversation.
Later that evening, 44,000 Black women came together on a Zoom call in order to show support of the future democratic nominee for President. In just two hours, over $1.5M was raised to support her campaign. But that’s not it. The next day, thousands of Black men came together for the same cause, too. The “Kamala for President” train had started and it wasn’t going to slow down any time soon.
In the following days, many other groups came together to show their support. Latinas for Kamala. White Women: Answer the Call. Veterans for Kamala. Catholics for Kamala. The LGTBQ+ community. White dudes. Black churches. All joining forces to support Kamala. After a while, I lost count of all the groups that came together to strategize and mobilize, but what I know is a lot of money has been raised.
As a Black women, I knew there were going to be attacks on her character and qualifications that would be similar to things I’ve experienced, especially as a Black woman engineer. Although she has accomplished a lot during her career, she was still called a DEI hire. I’m learning to protect my peace and not take things personally because I know better.
This isn’t a moment. It’s a movement. Seeing people come together has made me hopeful for this country. But still, we don’t know what November 5th is going to bring. I cannot allow myself to worry about that. All I can do is my part in mobilizing and exercise my vote.
This made me start thinking. Regardless as to how hopeful and unified I’m feeling, I know our country is still divided. There will be millions of people who will not be happy with the election results. However, in a democracy, we have to accept that the American people have spoken and figure out a way to move forward…together.
As a person who worked in sales, my organization would always remind us that each quarter was the “most important” quarter of our career. I’ve even heard people say the same about elections for many years. However, I believe this is the most important election of my lifetime. I hope you feel the same way and get out there and vote.
Okay, now that I’ve done my due diligence in reminding us of our civic duty, I want to remind you that regardless of what happens in November, we are still in control of our personal lives. We have the power to do, be and have what it is that we desire.
