Checking in on your 12 Resilience Resources (and other lessons in better mental health)
A few weeks back we were lucky enough to spend time with some wonderful mental health advocates and speakers. Continuing the conversation beyond #WorldMentalHealthDay is vital if we want to truly make an impact and so I wanted to share some of the things I learned from these world changers.
"When you invest on people, you are investing in their potential" beautiful words from Elisha London, founder + CEO of United for Global Mental Health. Elisha came to speak to us at our Global Wellbeing Event and she had some clear messages to share. Depression alone will be the leading cause of disease by 2030, every 40 seconds a person takes their life, and around 70% of mental health conditions are in people under 24. It is the leading cause of death in teenage women and the second leading cause of death for 15-30-year-olds. We have to keep finding ways to fix this!
We're better together. Mental health advocate, Hayley Mulenda shared the moving and inspirational story of her journey from pain to purpose. Hayley ended by reminding us that we are all facing battles of one kind or another and that together we can grow through it. What a wonderful, positive message. It's so important we all surround ourselves with people who love and support us and who have our best interests at heart. Do all your friends do that?
Check in on your Resilience Resources. Dr Michael Ungar, Family Therapist and Professor of Social Work at Dalhousie University is an authority on resilience and an advocate for the 12 resilience resources. He wants us all to be able to access our resilience resources in order to protect our wellbeing. One way we can do that is by asking ourselves some simple questions:
Do you have access to the 12 Resilience Resources?
Please do take the time to think about these questions. World Mental Health Day has passed, but until it becomes as normal to look after your mental health as it is to look after your physical health, we need to keep talking about it!
We've got to make mental health a strategic priority. My recent conversation with mental health advocate (and ex-Unilever employee) Geoff McDonald brought the mental health epidemic into sharp focus. Geoff is a passionate believer that simply running a "Mental Health/Wellbeing Week" at a company is not good enough. I urge you to listen to/watch/read about our conversation. Geoff has so many fascinating and important messages to share. It's time for companies to step up and take mental health seriously!
