Collaboration to support neurodiverse creatives launched in Portsmouth
Becky Lodge Founding Director of Little Kanga Ltd has announced a new partnership collaboration with Alec Chapman of POOW Media Production (People Of Our World) and Aspex Portsmouth in Gunwharf Quays, to bring a new creative ‘drop in’ space to help neurodiverse people to feel safe; and participate in a range of creative activities and events, to support neurodiverse creatives and tech and digital start-ups and companies in Portsmouth and the wider Hampshire area.
Becky explains:
‘Under our brand umbrella of StartUp Disruptors, we are delighted to be collaborating with the whole team at Aspex, including Director Joanne Bushnell and Sam Foot, Facilities & Resources Co-ordinator.
We talked through the mission and remit that we have to help both women, minorities and neurodiverse people to start and thrive in our business incubation community (at StartUp Disruptors) and it resonated absolutely with what Aspex are doing with their creative mission at the gallery around inclusion and diversity as well, so we decided to join forces to create something new in terms of creative support’.
Joanne Bushnell says:
‘We know that the work of artists and creatives is often undervalued and we are active champions for fair payment, so we feel that StartUp Disruptors can help provide invaluable advice and business acumen to our community of creatives who we have supported in the local area for over 40 years.
It is part of our vision at the gallery to create a safe space for all creatives in Portsmouth and the wider Solent region and we are aware that StartUp Disruptors already provides this type of space online for neurodivergent people to thrive in business. When we met Becky and Alec, we knew that there was an amazing synergy in our shared creative visions, so we are partnering to change things and help more creatives, whatever their discipline to thrive.
Using our space collaboratively, both Aspex (as a gallery and educational charity) and StartUp Disruptors (with its extended business community and knowledge base), will be able to provide a range of in person events in the gallery and also support creatives via the office space that Little Kanga and POOW have just taken up here. We are thrilled to welcome Becky and Alec to work with us.
Becky continues:
Portsmouth is our home. We are now an all online as a business support offering, but we started in a Pompey pub with 9 people in 2016 and grew to over 100 members very quickly. We then had to move to a bigger pub for our business support meetings. This was offered by Fullers Brewery at The Old Customs House at Gunwharf Quays, they were one of our earliest supporters.
We aim to provide people with a ‘drop in’ space designed exclusively for subscribing and paying members of their business community at StartUp Disruptors. There will also be courses and programmes for digital and creative skills available in the near future via this collaboration as well, which will be open to the public too.
Since 2016, we have helped 5000 people to start a business and generated over £2mn of funding for businesses across the region. In 2020 with the support and sponsorship of the University of Portsmouth Business School; StartUp Disruptors through its advice and incubation of early stage start-ups made Portsmouth the most entrepreneurial city in the UK and we are proud to continue to support people that are otherwise overlooked in education and society more widely. I am conscious as a digital creative individual myself, that we think differently and we need a ‘tribe’ to support us in our innovation and endeavours.
We are now creating this space in Portsmouth.

Alec Chapman concludes:
POOW media production started from the University of Portsmouth as a business idea and as a graduate from the University, we joined StartUp Disruptors to get advice, knowledge and networks, knowing that it would lead to ‘money can’t buy’ opportunities to work with like- minded creatives and digital start-ups.
We were truly inspired by the example that Becky had set in shaking up a city where business support had grown ‘stale’ and I couldn’t see a place for a business like mine to be made to ‘feel at home’ until we met Becky and it became clear that we needed to be part of things!
We are delighted that as a start-up we get the opportunity to share a space that can be useful to the wider creative community and our office with Becky will now form a central hub in Portsmouth for the new digital creative and innovation scene to thrive.
Myself and the team; at POOW are really looking forward to having our first ‘home’ and we know that this collaboration between Becky, Aspex Portsmouth and myself and our wider teams and supporters, will have a tremendous impact on both business and creatives in the city and the wider Solent region.
Our future plans with StartUp Disruptors, include the creation of a weekend podcast studio and more dedicated help and support for creative tech and digital businesses, including courses and programmes on social media for sole traders, entrepreneurs and those wishing to improve their digital tech skills and reaching out to those artists and creatives in the City and wider region that wish to learn how to monetise their skills and earn a living from them.
