At Columbia, High Schoolers Get an Early Ivy League Experience

Each summer, Columbia University transforms its campus to support a younger, pre-professional student base eager to get a head start on preparing for the college experience, as SPS hosts the Summer Programs for High School Students.

As students walk through the 116th Street Gates, down College Walk, and see the full panoramic view of Butler and Low Libraries for the first time, their passion for learning and excitement for the future becomes palpable. The historic buildings that host our own undergraduate and master’s students during the school year are now seated with teenagers learning Introduction to Constitutional Law, or Media and Politics in Global Perspective. The science labs are filled with their peers learning the physical effect on cells in a Biomedical Engineering course. (See the full list of courses taught here.) Columbia’s faculty, some of the most prestigious academics in the world, remain in New York City for the summer to teach their curricula to an animated and highly engaged younger audience.

Core to the mission of the School of Professional Studies is to encourage and enable lifelong learning across the educational spectrum--from high school to mid-career to retirement. Our Programs for High School Students directly address that mission: bringing together some of the world’s most accomplished and motivated young men and women--some who have traveled from as far as Saudi Arabia and Australia.

Although these students comprise a truly global cohort, they have something in common that will carry for the rest of their lives: a passion for learning and unending curiosity to improve their emerging skillsets. And now, here at Columbia this summer, they are connecting with like-minded peers who share similar goals and aspirations for their collegiate and professional careers.

This year, we were proud to introduce scholarships into the 2017 Programs. As we expand educational access to underserved communities, students will benefit from meeting and studying alongside a more diverse array of talent.

We continue to welcome applicants for Sessions II and III. Explore our 3-Week Immersion and 1 Week Immersion sessions here.
