Comfort Zones: The story of Mary.

Comfort Zones: The story of Mary.

Walking the dog gives me such great to time to reflect on coaching calls I have with clients. One such coaching call was with a client - we'll call her 'Mary' for confidentiality reasons - who I helped get clarity on what she wanted out of her career, life and leadership goals. She started of talking about this and that and then we went deep, really deep. On-the-verge of uncomfortably deep. Vulnerable deep. Far deeper than even Mary expected to go in her first coaching session with me - it was Mary that took us there - she needed to so desperately. The clients ALWAYS control the depth of the coaching calls. It became very clear to me very quickly that she was stuck.

Mary was spinning her wheels like a hamster on treadwheel (her words, not mine). Mary was having trouble making a decision. She is an amazingly talented leader, educated, a treasured member of her community, independent, a beautiful and generous heart and soul and she was ultimately blocked by indecisiveness, analysis paralysis and avoidance. She knew in her heart what she had to do, however she could not make a decision to move forward in any direction. It was making her miserable (again, her words, not mine).

The ego and sub-conscious is a very weird and wonderful thing. She was in her comfort zone and her own ego, sub-conscious and comfort zone were making her frustrated and unable to move forward on her own. The more stuck she got the more frustrated she was becoming with herself and it was a vicious cycle she was in - her ego and sub-conscious were winning the game. She was assuming she should be able to do this on her own, without support. After all, she was highly intelligent so why couldn't she get her "s#it" together???!!! (her words, not mine). "What is wrong with me?" she asked.

Mary was blocked and stuck in her beliefs and could not see her own "blind" spots. She knew it was her mindset that was holding her back and thought she could work through it on her own. After even a few coaching sessions, Mary stated she was feeling so much lighter, so much clearer, the fog had melted away and she had a firm sense of direction and clarity. We were able to create a plan of action that would help her to DO, BE and HAVE what she ultimately wanted from her Career, her Life and her Leadership role at work. "Working with you is like physiotherapy for my soul". Awe, shucks, thanks Mary. I am truly humbled and LOVE my career, the work I do and the incredible people I get to work with everyday.
