Coming Soon: India-Assembled Range Rovers by Jaguar Land Rover
In a historic move, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), the British subsidiary of Tata Motors, will begin assembling its flagship Range Rover and Range Rover Sport vehicles in India. This marks the first time these luxury SUVs will be manufactured outside the UK in over half a century. The decision highlights JLR’s strategic commitment to local manufacturing and the burgeoning luxury car market in India.
Local Manufacturing: A Game Changer for the Indian Market
Jaguar Land Rover will establish a new assembly line at Tata Motors’ Pune facility, Maharashtra, with an annual production capacity of 10,000 units in two shifts. Rajan Amba, Managing Director and CEO of JLR India, shared that this initiative is expected to lower prices by 18%-22%, positioning these luxury vehicles within the ₹1.5 crore and above category.
“We believe customers who were hesitant will now make that leap, contributing to the growth of Range Rover and Range Rover Sport in India,” said Amba.
Reflecting JLR’s Commitment to India
The local assembly of Range Rovers is a testament to JLR’s dedication to India’s market and the rising consumer demand for premium vehicles. Lennard Hoornik, JLR’s Chief Commercial Officer, emphasized that India’s manufacturing standards are on par with global expectations, enabling the production of world-class vehicles locally.
Market Expansion and Consumer Attraction
By locally assembling these models, JLR aims to attract a new set of buyers and broaden its footprint in the Indian market. The initiative is also expected to reduce waiting periods for new models, which currently extend up to 12 months. The India-assembled Range Rovers will be available for delivery by the end of May, with the Range Rover Sport following in mid-August.
Riding the Wave of Luxury Market Growth
India’s luxury car market, dominated by brands like Mercedes Benz, BMW, and Audi, totals approximately 50,000 units annually. JLR, positioned in the niche luxury segment, is poised to capitalize on the growing demand in the ₹1.5 crore and above category. The company anticipates the luxury car market in India to double to 100,000 units over the next five years.

“Our sales grew 82% last year, with significant increases in revenue and order volumes for the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport,” Amba noted. JLR reported revenues of ₹4,000 crore in FY24, with sales just shy of their 2018 record.
A Commitment to Quality and Local Market Focus
Currently, JLR assembles several models in India, including the Range Rover Velar, Evoque, Discovery Sport, and Jaguar F-Pace at its Pune plant. These vehicles are imported as completely knocked down (CKD) kits from the UK. With the addition of the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, JLR’s portfolio in India will be nearly entirely locally assembled, except for bespoke and SV models, which will remain imports.
The India-made Range Rovers will cater solely to the domestic market. By leveraging CKD assembly, JLR can avoid high import duties, allowing them to offer competitive prices and attract a broader customer base.
A Vision for the Future
N. Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Group, expressed gratitude for Ratan Tata’s vision, which brought JLR to India 15 years ago. He highlighted that manufacturing Range Rovers in India signals the company’s serious commitment to the Indian market.
With this strategic move, JLR is set to reshape the luxury automotive landscape in India, offering world-class quality and competitive pricing to meet the demands of discerning customers.

3moWhile the news of Jaguar Land Rover's expansion into India is exciting, it's a bitter pill to swallow for Italian customers who have received subpar service. I've been waiting months for a simple headlight repair, and every interaction with customer service has been frustrating. It's a shame that a brand known for luxury can't provide a luxury experience for its existing customers.
