Commons employee wins Women in Construction & Engineering Award

We are pleased to announce Joyce Chan, Schoof , the House of Commons Sustainability Lead in Strategic Estates, has won an award in the Environment & Sustainability category at the 2023 Women in Construction & Engineering Awards.

Women represent only 11 per cent of the construction workforce in the UK (and only 2 per cent in manual jobs), the awards aim to make construction industries more enticing to women and to create role models for women considering a career in these sectors.

Joyce said:

“Participating in the WICE Awards gave me a rare moment to pause and reflect on my professional journey of the past 20 years. I hope that it will motivate other young people, especially girls and women, to consider joining the design and construction industry.

Meeting other like-minded women at the WICE summit inspired me to do more for the sustainability profession, and promoting diversity is a key element to attracting talent to join this specialist subject that requires joined-up thinking and long-term vision.

The finalists and judges I met are all highly motivated leaders in the field. Hearing how they have overcome their own challenges reminded me that I am not alone on this journey in the engineering industry. The WICE process is not about competing but sharing and being curious about how we can do our best in our own discipline. It empowers us to make the wider construction and engineering industry more sustainable and more inclusive for everyone.”
