Contract and Expand: Moving with the Flow of Challenges
👋🏾Welcome to your bi-weekly jolt of well-brewed #inspiration. In serving #36 of 'BK Morning Brew’ let’s discuss moving with the flow of challenges. Thank you for subscribing, liking, sharing and commenting! #LetsBrewThis!☕️
Growing up in Louisville, KY, I had two heroes: Muhammad Ali and Bruce Lee. Ali was the hometown legend, and I boxed as a kid, trying to mirror his swagger and skill—he was “The Greatest” after all.
But Bruce Lee?
He was something else entirely.
I took every free karate class I could find and even made my own pair of nunchucks, just to feel a little closer to his world. His combination of patience and power lit a fire in my imagination, showing me that strength isn’t just about force—it’s about control.
Bruce Lee wasn’t just talking about fighting when he said, “When the opponent expands, I contract. When he contracts, I expand.” He was talking about life—about how we face challenges, people, and moments of pressure.
His words paint a picture of flow, of moving with the world rather than against it.
The truth is, there’s a rhythm to everything, even conflict.
Imagine yourself in a conversation, one of those heated ones where you can feel the tension building.
The other person keeps pushing, getting louder, trying to dominate the space. You feel that urge to push back, to match their intensity.
But what if you didn’t?
What if you simply stepped back, let the heat pass over you like a wave? You don’t lose anything by not engaging fully in the moment, but instead, you gain control.
That’s the heart of Bruce’s words.
When someone expands—when they try to take up all the room, throw all their energy at you—you don’t have to meet them head-on. You can contract, shrink into your own calm.
It’s about patience, restraint, and the wisdom to understand that battles aren’t always won by charging forward. Sometimes they’re won by staying still, by letting the storm blow past you.
And when the world pulls back?
When there’s quiet, hesitation, or a gap in the tension?
That’s when you step forward. That’s when you move, expand into the open space, and take control.
It’s not aggression.
It’s not dominance.
It’s simply timing.
Life offers moments to act and moments to wait. The trick is knowing when to do which.
This isn’t just about conflict.
It’s about adapting to whatever life throws at you. There will be days when everything seems to push against you—work, people, stress.
Expanding in those moments, trying to push harder, might break you.
But contracting? Shrinking back, regrouping, finding your balance?
That’s where the power is.
And when life gives you room, when things quiet down, don’t be afraid to step into the space and expand.
That’s when growth happens.
Bruce Lee’s words teach us that life isn’t about rigidly pushing through every challenge. It’s about moving with it, finding the rhythm, and dancing with the world around you.☕️
🗣️BK Biweekly Quote: “Be like water, my friend. Water can flow, or it can crash. Be water.” – Bruce Lee
💡BK Tiny Tip: When life pushes hard, don’t always push back. Take a breath, step back, and find your balance. Often, the power lies in knowing when to pause—and when to move.
🤯BK Mind-blowing Fact: The human brain is wired for neuroplasticity, meaning it can continuously change and adapt throughout life. Studies show that when we face challenges and practice resilience—whether through mental or physical flexibility—our brain forms new neural connections, making us better at adapting to future situations. This emphasizes the idea that, just like in Bruce Lee’s philosophy, our minds and bodies are built to contract and expand, adjust and grow, depending on what life throws at us.
✏️BK Journaling Prompt: Reflect on a recent challenge where you instinctively pushed back, trying to force a solution. What might have happened if you had paused, contracted, and waited for the right moment to respond? How can you bring more balance—knowing when to step back and when to act—into your daily life?
