Optimism seems to return in the industry about the future development of China’s outbound tourism after the third list of countries open for Chinese group tours was published by the Chinese government in early August. With the exception of Canada, all major destinations can now be visited not only by Chinese individual travellers but also by organised package tours.

Airlines have added more capacity and routes to and from China and only the slow processing of visa applications in many countries is preventing a greater number of affluent Chinese to travel abroad again. Most of them will stay in the region. However, new, less visited destinations in Europe and Asia are high on the wish list, with outdoor activities and immersive experiences overtaking shopping in searches on Chinese OTA websites and search engines.

Luxury tourism is booming as well: About 5,000 Chinese have already booked their trip to Antarctica this coming season, a third of them with the market leader Albatros Expeditions China.
