Cover Letters - Be Creative - Be Different

Cover Letters - Be Creative - Be Different

I have been actively seeking IT Support roles for quite some time now. With each application, I have added a cover letter. Some experts are saying that there's no point in doing a cover letters because 9/10 they are not really read. I disagree, and I believe in order to show your interest in a company. Writing a cover to express you interest sets you apart from the those who don't

With my old cover letter I had been using, I was not getting a lot of responses back. Could my cover letter need to be revised? I had someone read it and they suggested that I be more creative and find a way to stand out and be interesting. I spent time thinking how could I be different but creative at the same time. Then it came to me.

I recall a dialogue from the movie Taken where Liam Neeson explains about having a very particular set of skills, skills that have been acquired over a very long career. I thought that a portion of this would be great in a cover letter. Here is my cover letter-

Dear Hiring Manager,

If your company is looking for a dependable, results-oriented professional, I would be interested in speaking with you to discuss the value my strengths and experience I can bring to your search. I would like to express my interest in working with your company. What I have are a very particular set of skills, skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that would make me a positive asset to your company. I'm a hard worker who thinks outside of the box.

To validate this strong track record, I have scanned some of my client feedback cards and emails and my letter of recommendation from my former manager, which can be sent to you upon request. I am hoping you are as interested in my qualifications as I am in contributing to your company. I can be reached at 587-400-6198 and I look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you for your consideration.

Regards,

Gordon Pound

Since this change to my cover letter, I have been getting responses from a lot of recruiters and managers. I also revised my resume to outline my skills and experience to be more specific. The combination of both these changes I believe that is why I an getting contacted. I am grateful that I am getting interviews but it's the waiting for that phone call or email letting you know if you have the job or not.

I know that the market for work in Calgary is challenging. There are many talented, skilled and experienced people in our city. It's unfortunate that some have to leave our city to find work. Which is a loss to our city to loose such an amazing workforce to other provinces. I am hearing that the market is slowly improving and it looks promising.

For those who maybe managers or recruiters reading this, my LinkedIn profile does have my resume and I would be very interested in speaking with you to discuss the value my strengths and experience can bring to your company. I am hoping you are as interested in my qualifications. I look forward to hearing from you.

This article is about being creative and standing out from the crowd. I encourage those who are like myself, seeking for work. Find ways to make your cover letter stand out but also reflect your personality. I wish you all a great success in your quest for employment.

I totally agree a cover letter is your perfect opportunity to stand out in the crowd. I get many resumes and the people that actually bother to send one are proving already they'll go the extra mile that others aren't willing too. It's also a great way to personalize your application to any employer that a regular resume can't.
