Creators, Artists, Musicians, Authors, Thinkers, Perspective - 2022 Posts worth a 2nd look
I try to incorporate lessons and learning on creativity and artistic process, as we're each trying to unleash our personal muse'.
These posts from earlier in 2022 are worth a second look
An assortment from one of my favorites, Rick Beato . For as much as I love Rick's 'What Makes this Song Great?' series, he's getting heavily into interviews, and it's so fun to explore the creative process, the thinking, the limitations, the inputs, with artists such as Sting, Thomas Newman, Billy Corgan, and Kiko Loureiro (highlighted here), I could easily list all 33 in Rick's Interviews YouTube playlist, I've enjoyed them all, highlighted a few on LinkedIn as I think the lessons are universal and applicable, if not directly, listen and learn, and let it lay for a while, like a fine wine.

The Sting Interview
I like the way you use the word surprise because for me the essence of all music is surprise - Sting
Songwriting is fraught with anxiety, Will I ever write another song? Will I ever write one as good as that one. So you finish a song and, that feeling lasts about 20 minutes. And then where’s the next one? And you're never sure, you know - Sting

My LinkedIn Post on the topic, with so many reasons to love this clip, and the entire hour long interview. The focus on work, the paranoia of repeating success, the need for surprise, so much, so good.

A Warning On the Future of Music: with Author Ted Gioia
I learned researching 'Healing Songs' about music's ability to put us into a trance, to alter our mind states. But here's the catch ... It doesn't happen in 16 sec or 3 min, more like 10 minutes - Ted Gioia
(A Warning On the Future of the Music: with Author Ted Gioia - jump to 07:20)
My LinkedIn Post on the topic - Came for the commentary on the music industry, got all sorts of education on music history, theory, publishing on substack, and so much more. Ted's a very deep thinker. Reminds me of another music industry deep thinking, Bob Lefsetz.

The Smashing Pumpkins: The Billy Corgan Interview
Whether it's 10 years or 20, AI systems will completely dominate music - Billy Corgan, The Smashing Pumpkins
The things we've talked about involve a deeply emotional, intuitive process that takes time. It's an exploration of self - Billy Corgan, The Smashing Pumpkins
(The Smashing Pumpkins: The Billy Corgan Interview - jump to 01:26:10)
My LinkedIn Post on the topic - This one really touched a nerve, once again, ventured into areas like AI-generated music, the deeply emotional intuitive process that takes time as an exploration of self. Fantastic interview.

Megadeth Guitarist Kiko Loureiro's Shredding Secrets
Call me crazy, but I love hearing some of the best in the business describe how they practice, and never stop investing, experimenting, paying attention to the details and highlighting the nuance. Never stop learning, the process is the art.

Abstract: The Art of Design | Christoph Niemann: Illustration | FULL EPISODE | Netflix
Chuck Close said inspiration is for amateurs, as professionals, we just go to work in the morning ... It's not about this moment where inspiration strikes, It's about showing up, getting started. And then something amazing happens or it doesn't happen - Christoph Niemann

My LinkedIn Post on the topic - I love this Netflix Series. I love, Love LOVE this episode, especially the concept, just combining in every day, sitting down with the blank piece of paper, and putting in the work. The work defines the output, and it's the routine, of working through it. This clip, with the clock and blank page, captures a small taste, well worth a watch.

The Social Dilemma - Netflix
In 2022, you're creating for the intended Audience AND for the 'agents' that decide who sees what.
The agents are 'engagement, growth, and monetization' and they choose to display the content that best achieves their prime objective #1 - Time on Site
My LinkedIn Post on the topic - You have two audiences, people whom you hope to consume and enjoy your content, and the powers in charge of distribution, and trying to increase the probability of your content being inserted in the media stream of people that matter to you. Creepy yes, really important to understand. It's not what gets published into the platforms, it's what the platforms decide to put in front of whom. We want the platform to deliver our mail to the people that matter. And another post on the topic.

Think Different.
People are funny. Every time they buy three watermelons instead of one, yet they keep trying to teach me how to do business!"
My LinkedIn Post on the topic - A great way to close out this post.
An old man who sells watermelons had his pricelist read: 1 for $3, and 3 for $10
A young man stopped by and bought 3 watermelons one by one paying $3 for each
As the young man was walking away, he turned around and said: "Hey Oldman, do you realize that I just bought 3 watermelons for $9 instead of $10? Maybe business is not your thing!"
The old man smiled and mumbled to himself, "People are funny. Every time they buy three watermelons instead of one, yet they keep trying to teach me how to do business!"
Here's looking forward to a fantastic 2023.
