Cyber Ready goes Regional
Wow! What has happened to 2020?! At the beginning of the year I had written how we’ve avoided the dystopian future that was portrayed in sci-fi movies. Now, I’m not sure.
During this global pandemic, we’ve seen the best and the worst of humanity. The Clap for Carers initiative to show our support Essential Workers was truly heart-warming. When we think of the people that we were cheering of, first and foremost would be our NHS and all the Healthcare professionals. However, supporting them in the background were the IT and Telecoms industry, including Cyber Security Professionals.
When lockdown was initiated, overnight we had huge swathes of remote workers – in industries that previously did not have the mechanism to support such a transition. When people were concerned about their livelihoods, increased mental strain due to having to balance work, family and home-schooling, the cyber criminals took the opportunity to act. In May, Check Point revealed a 30% increase in coronavirus-related cyber-attacks compared to previous weeks.
Today the news bulletins are full of measures that are easing lockdown, however, according to the World Economic Forum (WEF), the third highest concern that companies have is the increased number cyber-attacks and data fraud.
In March, DCMS published their annual Cyber Security Skills in the UK Labour Market; A key finding stated that employers reported a third (35%) of their vacancies as being hard to fill due to a lack of technical skills or knowledge (43%) and soft skills (22%).
The report also mentioned how a pathway could be built up for IT Professionals to move into core Cyber Security role utilising CompTIA certifications.
Last year, we concluded our Cyber Ready pilot programme that was made possible by the Cyber Skills Immediate Impact Fund (CSIIF). We recruited 30 individuals, who were working (or had previously worked) as IT Pros, from across the country to undertake the experiment of whether we could provide them the knowledge, skills and certification for them to access a Cyber Security Analyst role – and the answer was: yes, we can!
The pilot programme was delivered using a flipped classroom approach where our successful candidates completed the CompTIA Security+ and CompTIA CySA+ (Cyber Security Analyst) certifications using ITPro.TV, undertook the Wargames provided by TryHackMe, which was topped up with career coaching, and took up roles at Airbus, BAE Systems, ECSC, Lloyds Banking Group, Racing Post, Runpath, and other organisations.
We’re now doing it all again – with one key difference…we’re doing it regionally.
Cyber Ready West Midlands is aimed at individuals living in the West Midlands region. We have 15 places for this programme. This programme has been made possible by the West Midlands Combined Authority’s Digital Retraining Fund.
Cyber Ready North West is aimed at individuals living in Greater Manchester and Lancashire. We have 30 places for this programme. The programme has been made possible by The Fast Track Fund. The Fast Track Fund is supported by Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA), in partnership with the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport and the Lancashire Digital Skills Partnership (DSP) to address the digital skills gaps across Greater Manchester and Lancashire.
If you or someone that you know that is based in the regions above and would welcome the opportunity to upskill themselves for a cybersecurity, you can download more details about the programme and an application form here:

Applications close in mid-August so apply asap!
[Edited to add:] The programme is fully funded (i.e. free) and we have a limited number of places. We have already begun interviewing.
[Edited to add:] Exact closing date is TBC but would be dependent on when we have exceeded the number of applicants that we can interview.
I would be grateful if you could share this post.
Thanks for reading and let’s continue to work together to make the UK the safest place to live and do business online.
