Cyber Security Trends Affecting Australian Organizations

Cyber security is no longer a technical IT problem, instead it has grown into a global business risk. This has triggered organizations to upgrade their abilities to appropriately manage cyber risks disrupting their security base. As per Gartner’s analysis, strategic planning assumptions state that - By 2025, 60% of organizations will use cybersecurity risk as a significant factor to conduct third-party transactions and business engagements. Also, by 2026 it has been predicted that 30% of large organizations will have publicly shared environmental, social and governance (ESG) goals focused on cybersecurity.

The cyber security risks and threat environment in Australia have heightened over the years. Following the attack on Ukraine, risk of cyber-attack increased on Australian networks. Hence, Australian organizations are encouraged to elevate their cyber security posture to mitigate threats posed by a range of malicious cyber actors. Even destructive malware can drastically affect daily operations, impacting the quality of critical assets and data.

Here are the top 3 cyber security trends affecting the Australian organizations:

Secured Home Working: Since Covid 19 created a worldwide trend of working from home, there are several teams in Australia working remotely for safety reasons. However, this causes a security concern as IOT devices can increase the chances of cyber crime as work from home is still prevalent in Australian organizations, just as widespread in other organizations globally.

Increased Cyber Security Awareness: Threats will be identified only if digital users have the right awareness about it. The same thought is followed by organizations in Australia and that’s how the trend of creating user awareness programs about cyber security are introduced to keep the digital assets secured.

Measures for Cloud Security: As enterprises in Australia are migrating to the cloud platforms, it can possibly raise the percentage of cyber threats. This can occur when cloud service providers do not have proper encryption or secured pathways for login/authentication. Hence, IT security experts are seeking robust cloud security measures to safeguard critical data in the cloud database.

Lastly, The Australian Government, led by the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC), aims at building cyber resilience and strengthening the cyber security posture for organizations in Australia by working on 8 essential areas – Daily backup | Application control | Patch Applications | Configure Microsoft Office Macro Settings | User Application Security | Restrict Administrative Privileges | Patch Operating Systems | Multi Factor Authentication
